Difficulty finding an ABA therapist
Hi everyone,
My daughter was recently diagnosed and approved for services through EI.
The agency has mentioned that they cannot find someone for ABA and instead, are going to give her special education five days a week. She initially qualified for ABA five times a week at 90 minutes per day.
My question is, is this normal? We have been waiting a little over two weeks and I dont want my daughter to not receive the services she was actually approved for.
If she is receiving special ed, then will the agency not be as proactive in finding someone for ABA?
This is all new to me so Im a bit confused.
On another note, if someone knows a person who will do ABA privately, please pm.
thx!

Re: Difficulty finding an ABA therapist
If the agency cannot find someone within their agency to provide ABA then they need to go out to other agencies to see if they have therapists available. Talk to your EI Coordinator.

Difficulty finding an ABA therapist
I find that hard to believe. I'm an ABA provider with a BCBA.. the aba cases go quick. Especially in EI. Tell them they need to reach out again.

Re: Difficulty finding an ABA therapist
I think tis time a year is hard a lot of therapists have full schedules. Have them keep trying other agencies even if they can get a few sessions of ABA with the SEIT. Not that its an help now but summer they usually open up.

That's what they keep saying ... That everyone's schedule is full right now. Im hoping i can at least find anyone, even if i need to pay privately in the meantime. They keep pushing the special ed on me so i was confused as to why but im sure something is better than nothing. They also couldnt get a team leader. Im going to cross my fingers- thx!

Re: Difficulty finding an ABA therapist
Wow. I am surprised to hear this. When my son was getting ABA at home through EI, I had very specific times I could do it. I work ft, so wanted it Friday, sat, and sun. My EI coordinator said it might be tough to find someone but she said don't worry there are a lot of agencies that provide ABA and she would go from agency to agency until she found a therapist that could do my hours. She found it in the first agency. She gave them a week to respond to her inquiry (since they needed to field it out to the therapists) and they called her back 2 days later.
I'm in Queens so don't know if it is different as a lot of the agencies were NYC based and served the 5 boroughs.

This....its almost impossible to find someone with availability this time of year....but i wouldn't settle.....take SI for now but get your ABA.....how many months is she and where do you live?

She will be two in June and we live in Oyster Bay Cove. Nothing has changed so far. We dont have a team leader, no aba, no parent training- nothing! Im literally at my wits end... We do like the special education person that comes to the house though. She has been coming 3 times a week at one hour increments. My daughter is supposed to get aba 5 times a week at 90 min.

Ugh so sorry. I had a similar experience trying to get OT started and it took 5 months for one to be available. I am surprised that there is not more ABA therapist availability.. I would take the Special Education teacher for now until the ABA therapist can start, hopefully by the summer.
