Thank you

Thank you to those that reached out. Sometimes it is better to just take a step back and be there and trust that the parents know what they are doing.

Parents in denial

He had heart surgery at 3 months, 3 months later started EI, and has now been getting various services for 6 months? I'm not sure I would consider this "in denial" as he's been getting intervention since he's 6 months old.
Honestly, I think you need to mind your own business. There are possibly other things going on with him that they're not sharing with you. He's getting services, seeing a doctor regularly, and you've already offered up advice.

Thank you for your opinion but I will not mind my own business. This is my nephew and my SIL whom I am very close too. I am just looking to see if there is anywhere else she can reach out to since there is something extremely not right with this baby and he does not have a voice to express his needs.

Parents in denial

Doesn't seem to me that the parents are in denial. The child just had heart surgery which alone causes major developmental delays. The child is still young and it seems they are speaking to the correct people. He is a year old and had major surgery. After the child completely heals some of the developmental delays might start catching up. If not he will get an increase in services. Regardless of if this is your nephew or not, you need to mind your own business, you are not the parent. Not for nothing, my daughter didn't sit up, roll over, eat with her fingers until almost 2 and now has no physical issues what so ever.

Thank you! I just spoke to her and I feel better now. I wish I could do more to help her. She works full time and is overwhelmed with another child. I know every child is different, I just worry that at his age he should be doing more and progressing faster. I do need to just let her do her thing and if she needs me she knows where I am. Its hard to hear mind your own business but that is what I need to do. As a mom with a special needs child I saw the progress he made and I forget that even though I have three kids, every child is different. My nephew will go at his own speed and can catch up at his own time.
Thanks again.

Sounds like he's getting a lot of help but like you're realizing, kids respond to therapy differently. My oldest was slower to catch up than my youngest with motor skills. She also ended up back in PT at 4yo bc she fell back behind. My youngest had only 6 months of EI but she caught up so fast and never looked back. It's amazing how differently they've progressed and my younger one is the one who was considered high risk for delays.
Since it's been 6 months, he should have been reevaluated and they should have considered any changes to his services. If you're close, maybe ask how that is going. You can also ask if she is happy with the therapists and be a support to her if she is considering a change. I definitely considered changing once or twice but I let it go. Maybe if I had someone pushing me I would have reconsidered making a stink about the things I want thrilled with.
Aside from that, I think I would just try to help and support them in whatever ways they need. He's got a lot of people on his side but just bc he's getting help doesn't mean he's going to catch up overnight.

Thank you! My son started at 3 months when he came home from the NICU. He had 4 surgeries before the age of 2. He has been in an integrated class since the age of 3. He still has a ways to go but is doing better. I just want her to know that if she is not happy with the therapists then she can change them. I also want her to know what she can get. I switched my sons OT when she became a little to physical for him and too harsh. She did have her 6 month but that is when they gave him the extra days of services. I forget that he has a lot against him and that sometimes it takes longer for other kids. My son still walked late, and has no interest in writing or doing homework so I know I will have a hard time when september comes and he starts kindergarten. I just wish I could do more to help her.
