So, I went to the first ever NYC Nail Polish Convention...
I walked out with THIRTY TWO bottles of nail polish.
Plus a few extras: glass file and case/lip balm/sugar scrub/oils/lotion
It was all indie nail polish designers and it was really inspiring to be able to chat with some of them because I am just dipping my toes into making polish myself.
And I just checked how much longer the Zoya Earth Day Exchange is going on for.
I think I may have a problem. 
It was so difficult last night, trying to decide which polish to try first!
EDIT - Forgot to add that while I was AT the convention, I stepped aside for a few minutes because my favorite indie designer wasn't showcasing at the event BUT was releasing a bunch of new polishes online that afternoon...so I was buying polish online AT a polish convention.
HAHAHAHA oh lord. This is bad.

Right now I have polishes stored in a bunch of shoeboxes in my closet. A cool, dark place is best for them.
But my collection is getting overwhelming and I'm going to use my old IKEA Helmer cabinet to start organizing them. I just gotta empty that out! When I do, it'll be organized by brand and then by color and I'll keep it in a google spreadsheet so I don't buy the same color twice. I used to remember what I had but not anymore!
My own creations are stored by date, also in a cool dark place...they need to sit for at least six months to see if the pigment gets streaky/separates or if the glitter settles to the bottom.
As far as chucking them...I don't ever really need to because I take really good care of them. But sometimes one will get thick and I'll roll it around/shake it up and sit the bottle in a bowl of hot water in an effort to thin it.
Thermal nail polishes - ones that change color in hot/cold - usually only last a year to a year and a half but if you keep them in a cool dark place ALL the time, you can sometimes get two years out of them. The pigment used in them stops transitioning after time.

I'm so jealous! Love the indie polishes. I have a problem too. I have some nerve if I ever buy another nail polish ever again but I can't help myself

Yes, all of this!
I used to be obsessive about my nails. I stuck to the same few colors though and found that they always got thick and clumpy after a while.

I had no idea nail polish convention was even a thing! Hahaha buying polish online at the polish convention and a spreadsheet to keep track lol -- I think you may have a problem! Seriously though that is so cool. Creating your own must be so much fun! Do you sell yet?

To answer some questions -
Yes, the convention was open to the public (you had to pay to get in) - it was all indie makers. There is one in Chicago every fall and the one in the spring rotates cities.
Nail polish can be good for years if you store it right (cool dark dry place) and keep the neck of the bottle clean (use acetone to remove residual polish)
I just started making mine in March after MONTHS of research..I spent a good six months learning, watching videos, reading interviews with polish makers, scouring reviews and joining different Facebook groups. I do intend to eventually sell - I have a brand name picked out, a friend commissioned to design the logo, and have registered an Etsy shop. But I can't put anything for sale yet; I need to let my prototypes sit for a few months to make sure that the formulas don't separate/get streaky/glitter doesn't settle.

Aww, thanks guys! It'll be awhile, a lot of trial-and-error, but I'll keep you posted 
In other news, just got a shipment notification for the bottles I bought online while at the convention so WOOHOOOOOOOO hahaha

I feel like I would be more into nail polish if i had better nails. What are some of your favorite indie brands? I buy indie makeup, but I don't know anything about nail polish.
That's cool that you are starting your own. Are you just making this in your apartment, or are you working with a lab somewhere?
