Yoga
I am a total newbie and just signed up for my first class. I know I'm going to be so nervous and will be flopping around, falling, etc. For those who do it - how quickly did you "learn"? It's also not a beginner class (there were none, but the reviews said the instructor is great for all levels, including beginners). Any tips or advice? Seems like a great stress reliever so I hope I can get into it.

Re: Yoga
ive only been to a handful of classes. I try to go to at least 1 class when im doing a beach vacation. I actually got so into it in Bali that I cried. Yoga is so soooooo good for you! not all classes are the same and not all instructors are alike either. Dont be nervous!! Everyone has been a beginner at one point, right? Do what youre comfortable with. its OK to sit out a pose. Nobody will be judging you

don't worry about flip flopping around its normal. Yoga is not about pain and discomfort when performing the poses its about the process of getting to the next level. I use to take yoga all the time. Enjoy, I might be starting this again soon too

More than likely before the class begins the instructor will ask if anyone has an injury or if it's anyone's first time taking a class. Make sure to let the instructor know that it is your first time, he/she will likely demonstrate beginner versions of some of the moves. Enjoy and don't stress about falling, etc. I find yoga to be the least judgmental form of exercise.

Thank you guys SO much, I actually feel better reading these responses. I am really psyched to try it. I've heard so many good things. I need something calming in my life (and exercise too!).

Do not be nervous! Yoga instructors are usually great, just let them know its your first time, and go at your own pace.
Don't worry about whatever anyone else is doing, your practice is for you.

I got a DVD called Yoga for Beginners before I started a class. It was super helpful in learning the basics before setting foot in a class.

Re: Yoga
There was a time where I was so into it, especially hot yoga. U do feel amazing and for me, it took some time to get the hang of it but even at the very begging u feel a difference. My friend absolutely loves it, to the point that she became a certified yoga instructor and not because she needed the money (she has a great job) but because it made her feel great, physically and just overall happy. Two things I'd suggest, 1) eat before u do it! Even if it's just a banana. Do not do it on an empty stomach. The first time I did it, I actually briefly passed out! 2) focus on u only and tune out everybody else (well expect the instructor, lol!) and push urself slowly, gradually, and depending on how ur body is reacting.
Namaste!

Re: Yoga
I LOVE yoga. I bought a 20 class package and went to a weekly Beginees class. It too about 16 classes for me to be at the point where I felt totally comfortable, stronger, more flexible and have a better sense of balance. At that point I started going to a more challenging class yoga flow in addition to the beginner class. Yoga is non judgement any one can do it. I also eat a light snack prior to yoga and try to hydrate well throughout the day.

Re: Yoga
And if you don't like that class/ teacher... try another!!! Every teacher is different. Also, some classes say they are all levels and they really aren't. They can be very challenging and hard to modify if you don't already know yoga. So if this one doesn't work, try another school that does have a beginner class. I've been doing yoga for a while now and I still go to beginner classes every now and again to refine my practice. Beginner classes definitely have their value.
Enjoy!!!

I ended up getting an email late this afternoon saying that tonight's class was canceled. Ugh.
