Wet hair causing mildew on pillows and bedding
Any advice? My 5yo has a lot of hair so it stays pretty wet when she has a bath before bed. I threw out her pillow a few months ago when I noticed black spots on it. There were also some on the mattress cover and bottom sheet. Fast forward a few months and it's happening again. If I wash everything with bleach is that effective or do I need to toss everything again? She's about to move to a twin bed with all new stuff but I don't want this to keep happening. She's very against the hair dryer so I don't know what to do.

Washing in bleach or even vinegar is fine. No need to toss.
In terms of her hair, can you put a towel on her pillow? Does she move around a lot where it would slide off? If DD goes to bed with damp hair, that is what I do.

I'll definitely give the towel a try. Thanks

Wet hair causing mildew on pillows and bedding
I put a towel on my daughter's pillow. She goes to bed with her hair wet all the time.

You can get a waterproof pillow protector, as well as one for the mattress, too.
Why doesn't she like the hair dryer? Maybe you can make it something fun? Like let her read or play a game on the iPad while you dry her hair?

Just wanted to put this out there only bc I'm super paranoid - bed bugs leave little black spots (almost look like ink dots).

Ick, I will double check but based on where the spots are wet hair makes the most sense. And definitely bigger than ink marks.

Is the mattress a plastic toddler mattress? My daughter goes to bed with wet hair most nights, and we don't have that issue. But, she has a regular mattress. Sometimes she sleeps with her "turbie twist" in (a hair turban).

It is. I hadn't thought of that but I did wonder if her sheets were part of the problem bc they don't seem super breathable. Hopefully a waterproof cover on a regular mattress with cotton sheets will be better but I'll definitely try the towel too.

I'll be honest - I find this odd. My DD has been sleeping with wet hair for years and I have never seen anything like this.

Yes, me too. Not sure what it could be.

Your homes might just be drier than the OPs home. I use to live in a house that was super humid. Everything was always damp. I was constantly running dehumidifiers. If I didn't run a dehumidifier, I couldn't even hang clothes to dry. By the time they actually dried, they would have a musty mildew smell and I'd have to wash them again. I always figured it was because there were a ton of trees on that property and the house was always in the shade.
Completely the opposite, the air in my brothers house is soooo dry. They have a humidity gauge and they run a humidifier year round (in every room in the winter) to try to keep it within a normal range. I have to drink so much water if I spend more than an hour there.

I don't think it's terribly humid but their room does run hottest when the heat is on. It is weird, I mean I have similar long hair and have slept with it wet on and off my whole life with no issues. I tend to think it's a combo of the plastic type mattress and the waterproof cover. I was thinking maybe the polyester blend sheets but I compared today and the all cotton ones are worse than the blend. If you look at her pillow you can see exactly where her head lies bc it's so discolored with tiny black spots and then some bigger ones spread out from there in a few spots. I really don't know but I don't want her sleeping on that and don't want to be replacing bedding every few months.

I have waterproof covers on my kids pillows. They zip over the pillow, then you put on a pillowcase. It prevents the actual pillow from getting wet--I got them for pee accidents or puke, but they could work in your case too!!

Wet hair causing mildew on pillows and bedding
I understand that she may not like the hair dryer, but she is 5. I think that drying her hair is the best thing. My daughter hates it too and has long hair so it's a PITA but that's tough on her. I let her play with some toys on the bathroom counter while I dry it. I don't mean for this to sound snarky, but if your daughter didn't like brushing her teeth or washing her hands after she went to the bathroom would you allow her not to do those things? Mold can make her sick.

Re: Wet hair causing mildew on pillows and bedding
As others have said, I always sleep with a towel on my pillow (one of the smaller towels... like a hand towel) covering my pillow when I go to bed with wet hair & I also find it more comfortable since it's absorbent than sleeping directly on the pillowcase with wet hair.
