DH and I are thinking of hitting French Polynesia in the spring and doing the whole over water bungalow thing.

Any recommendations for specific hotels? Areas? Is there anything to do besides lay out in the sun and stare at fish all day - LOL? We like a good mix of adventures and relaxing.

It will be us and another couple.

That was our exact honeymoon!!!

We flew from ny, connecting in lax and went directly to Papeete for one night. We landed so late and just crashed.

Next day we took the ferry to moorea. Spent 6 nights at the Hilton moorea and a bungalow with a private pool.

Then we flew on a small a$$ plane to bora bora and spent 7 nights at the st. Regis (where they filmed couples retreat) in an overwater bungalow with jacuzzi on the deck.

We did lots of excursions and some restaurants I'd recommend.

So there's ferry service between the islands unlike Hawaii?

Also, what were your favorite excursions?

Yes. There's a ferry between Papeete and Moorea. Beautiful ride.

Moorea
Jeep safari tour through the rainforest, stop at vanilla and juice plantations

Bora bora
Mini submarine (so cool)
Jet skiing
Snorkels with sting rays and sharks

Also book the VIP table at villa mahana. Books 6 months in advance

We went with another couple July 2016

We flew direct to Hawaii and spent 4 nights at the royal Hawaii hotel. Then we flew direct from Honolulu to Papeete
Direct on Hawaiian airlines. We stayed one night at the intercontinental Papeete. And the next morning flew on a decent size plane to Bora Bora.
We stayed at the four seasons hotel in bora bora it was amazing. We stayed 5 nights

We skipped Moorea. A few people had said if they ever went back to Tahiti they would skip it so that's what we did
We stayed another night at the interconinental and then flew back to LAX

This is all very helpful.

We are trying to get the timing down. I know it's a long flight, but DH hates feeling rushed. From everything I've read, you only need one night in Tahiti. Is a week each on Bora Bora and Moorea too long? Would you shorten it up and do maybe 10 nights on the islands and then another couple of nights in Hawaii or California?

A week in each island is a lot. I'd fly to la and spend a few nights there to break up the trip.

Morrea was our favorite island. So much charm and old school. Walk to restaurants local. The chef of one reataurnet drive is home one night lol. It was the most authentic. Bora bora was amazing as well but that was the hotel. We stayed at st Regis and it's so beuatful. Huge but nice.
We also stayed on another island. I can't remember the name but it wasn't as nice. Rooms were dates etc. still nice. It not as nice as the rest of our trips.

We flew to Cali. And stayed overnight. Then to Tahiti. We only slept here for 1 night. We flew to morrea and a yacht to bora bora. I'd have to ask my husband for the details as I dot. Remember lol.

we stayed at the hilton moorea and bora bora- skipped tahiti except for the airport. i think a week each is a bit long imo. i would definitely do moorea before bora bora! it's amazing there!

We have 17 nights to play with.

We are thinking of the following:

JFK to LA - 1 night in LA
LA to Moorea 3 nights on Moorea
Moorea to Bora Bora - 3 nights on Bora Bora
Bora Bora to Kauai - 5 nights on Kauai
Kauai to Maui - 5 nights on Maui

is 3 nights on each island enough? too long?

Looks good to me, but you don't go nonstop from la to moorea. You go from la to Papeete to moorea so factor in that travel time too.

Thank you for your help!!! I think we've got a rough idea of our itinerary. Now to start picking out hotels and figure out flights.
