GoldenRod...

I know you're a proud Boy Scout leader.

I just want to offer up some virtual hugs. I'm sure you're absolutely infuriated and horrified with yesterday's events.

I was thinking of GoldenRod as well when I was watching Trump's speech. It was beyond inappropriate, disgraceful and horrifying. Trump has no self-control or any decency, even in front of children.

My husband is an Eagle Scout and was LIVID. Completely inappropriate. This man can only focus on himself, no one else.

Re: GoldenRod...

Yeah... I read the headlines, and some excerpts from it, and even that got my blood boiling. I don't think I'll be able to listen to the entire thing.

Everything he said is basically the polar opposite of what the Boy Scouts stands for.

To take a platform like that and make it completely about him and politics is disgusting.

And to have him encourage kids to boo the former Honorary BSA President is beyond words. All POTUSs are automatically Honorary BSA Presidents, so to have boys, many of them who earned their Eagle Scout rank under Obama, be encouraged to boo him is just incomprehensible.

Chat Icon You said it so eloquently. "so to have boys, many of them who earned their Eagle Scout rank under Obama, be encouraged to boo him is just incomprehensible."
I just became a girl scout leader and encountered a woman who embodies the opposite of what a leader should be/teach. Chat Icon Disheartening.

Re: GoldenRod...

My brother and I both earned our Eagle Scout rank under President Reagan. I wasn't thrilled with his politics, but he never politicized his position as Honorary President of the BSA, never made us boo former BSA presidents, even if they were of the "opposite" party, never made me embarrassed to hear him speak, or to earn my Eagle rank under him.

Re: GoldenRod...

I'm so angry about this! DS just started boyscouts this past year. After much consideration from DH and I. We were on the fence due to the policies we felt were discriminatory, but it seemed like, at least in NY, they had sort of gotten past that. There is also the religious aspect of it which I'm not very comfortable with - and from what I have read, it is becoming more religious which bothers me - but we could respect the whole of the organization.
But with this, I don't know. I kind of understand it being exciting and maybe historical to see a president speak. But this one - if he had just done what he should have which was to speak inspiring, encouraging messages, while I still would have hated it, at least in the general sense, I could have been ok with it. This bull$hit of making it yet another campaign rally for him is beyond disgusting!!!
I know DS's new den leader is a supporter (only because he used to wear his red cap to den meetings when he wasn't the leader) and I am fearful that he may not keep his political views to himself.
The BSA really need to fully denounce this $hitshow! I can understand that probably, he had a prepared speech, but added in his own garbage as he felt he was getting the adoration from the crowd he so completely needs, but the BSA need to say, in no uncertain terms that they are not ok with it. I would hate to pull DS out - he seems to like it and it gives him a chance to spend time with friends - but I won't have him part of a group that supports this monster!!

I definitely understand. I've been struggling with a lot of BSA policies for years. Our troop has never been very political or overly religious even before DS and I joined, so I was able to look past the National policies. Now that I'm the Scoutmaster, I make sure all politics are kept out of the conversations, and I'm working on how to keep my views on religion true to me, while still staying within the boundaries of Scouting.

It's a hard line to toe. There really aren't any other organizations that I know of that compare to BSA as far as teaching life skills, love of the outdoors, leadership skills, etc., so I can even say screw it, I'll just go over there instead.

I've been a leader of one type or another ever since DS joined, so I was lucky to not have to deal (or have DS have to deal) with a leader that was extreme in any belief.

You're always welcome to join my troop when DS is 11. I promise I won't wear a MAGA hat.... Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: GoldenRod...

Thanks! We have a few years to go yet and he may very well lose interest by then.

The whole religion thing threw me. I never even knew that was a part of it. I'm not religious and have no issues with others with a religious view, but I was fairly uncomfortable with the Duty to God part (which as I understand is a newer thing - well, being a badge anyway.) DS's den leader was pretty loosey-goosey with it when we talked about it. She was talking to me and the now new leader (with the MAGA hat) and said basically we could do that on our own - since she didn't know peoples situations and beliefs. Then the MAGA guy goes "I'm Muslim" {{wink-wink}} like he was being funny. I was pretty disgusted at that point. I'm not super excited he's the new den leader.Chat Icon

The head of the Boy Scouts of America apologized on Thursday for President Donald Trump’s speech at the organization’s national summit earlier this week.

“I want to extend my sincere apologies to those in our Scouting family who were offended by the political rhetoric that was inserted into the jamboree,” Chief Scout Executive Michael Surbaugh wrote in a letter to the organization. “That was never our intent.”

“For years, people have called upon us to take a position on political issues, and we have steadfastly remained non-partisan and refused to comment on political matters,” Surbaugh continues. “We sincerely regret that politics were inserted into the Scouting program.”

Read the full letter here.

Trump’s political rhetoric during his remarks at the 2017 National Boy Scout Jamboree on Monday brought on immense backlash, including from parents who have children in the organization.

Despite vowing not to discuss politics during his remarks, the president did so anyway. He jokingly threatened to fire Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price if Senate Republicans don’t manage to repeal the Affordable Care Act. He also recounted his electoral victory against Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and railed against the “fake news” media.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

President Donald Trump told The Wall Street Journal last week the Boy Scouts of America were “very thankful” for his politically charged remarks at the group’s national summit, despite pushback from parents and former scouts, and an eventual apology from the head of the organization. The Boy Scouts later denied Trump’s claim, saying they are not aware of anyone from the organization calling the president to discuss his comments.

According to a transcript of the July 25 interview published by Politico on Tuesday, Trump challenged a Wall Street Journal reporter who said the speech had received “mixed” feedback.

“There was no mix there,” Trump said. “That was a standing ovation from the time I walked out to the time I left, and for five minutes after I had already gone. There was no mix.”

He continued: “And I got a call from the head of the Boy Scouts saying it was the greatest speech that was ever made to them, and they were very thankful. So there was ? there was no mix.”

The Boy Scouts later disputed Trump’s account, and the group said it is unaware of any such call to the White House.

“The Chief Scout Executive’s message to the Scouting community speaks for itself,” the organization said in a statement to Time, referring to Chief Scout Executive Michael Surbaugh’s apology.

Trump, speaking at the 2017 National Boy Scout Jamboree the day before the interview with the Post, veered from prepared remarks to pressure Senate Republicans to pass an Obamacare repeal bill, criticized the “fake news” media, and reveled in his defeat of Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election. Trump’s fiery political rhetoric received intense backlash, and ultimately prompted the apology from Surbaugh.

“I want to extend my sincere apologies to those in our Scouting family who were offended by the political rhetoric that was inserted into the jamboree,” Surbaugh wrote. “That was never our intent.”

When asked whether the president himself should issue an apology to the scouting organization, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders dodged.

“I was at that event and I saw nothing but roughly 40 to 45,000 Boy Scouts cheering the president on throughout his remarks, and I think they were pretty excited that he was there and happy to hear him speak to them,” Sanders said at Thursday’s press briefing.

It's not a standing ovation if there aren't any chairs.... that's just called "standing"....
