how to dress in your 40s

I'm not a particularly fashionable person but I want to start dressing better as I lose weight. I've been 50 pounds over weight for over 10 years and wear the same thing all the time b/c I feel yucky about my weight and I just looked for clothes that fit.

I have a lot of vintage clothing from when I was in my 20s that I was thinking I wanted to wear again once I lost enough weight. However, a new woman started yesterday in my office and she's probably my age (or slightly older) and she was wearing a 50s inspired dress and I felt like she was a little too old to dress like that.

Any suggestions for blogs or IG's that have age appropriate but fashionable (and not too expensive) styles?

Check Pinterest. There are a lot of "older" style blogs that are far more realistic.

I've been following "Wear it for Less" on Facebook and "Living in Yellow". I love both of their styles. Some of the clothing is very reasonable (especially "Wear it for Less"). I am over 40 and both blogs are very age-appropriate. Also, I have gotten great deals from following both of them.

thanks! i'm in my 40's too and struggle with what to wear also, as i see so many cute things but then think i would look ridiculous wearing it. I have a pretty simplistic style so would love to see suggestions etc.

I juat wear what I like and what works on my body. Imo it's not about age but more about body type. My thighs were never meant for short shorts even when I was 20 so I avoid those....Chat Icon but I don't think you have to start dressing a certain way just because your birth date says you hit 40

I totally agree with this! In fact, since I turned 40 (over two years ago) I started dressing a bit less conservatively and I started focusing on what looked good on my body. I force myself to try stuff on now instead of discounting it right away. If I put it on, and it makes me feel good, I go with it!

This exactly.

I am approaching 51.
I know what looks good on my body and what works for me.
Today I am wearing a pair of wide leg linen trousers with a v-neck dressy tee, elbow length sleeves. It is comfortable and works for me. I'd never wear skinny pants with a tee-shirt. I'm too big for that look.

How Jen Does It on youtube. She has some great videos on outfits. She is also very big on saving money so she does a lot of thrifting. But I agree with the others about wearing what makes you feel good.

I don't think there is just one way, to dress in your 40s, but your style in your 20s may not fi t your in your 40s, especially if you hadn't dressed that way for years. If you were into vintage & just pull all that back out as soon as it fits you, it may look a bit costumey.

someone mentioned How Jen Does It, and I like her videos & think she dresses nicely, but it is not at all my style. I don't like to be modern or trendy at all.

I think if you don't feel comfortable in full on vintage styles that you used to wear, you can probably create a variation of that look.

I am a lover of pencil skirts & cardigans. Always a classic. (if I lost weight, buy skirts would be pencilier. :) )
You could always start by adding retro jewelry or bags if that is what you like.

ModCloth is a good place to start, and they have range of sizes, so you can get new things even if you aren't at your goal weight.

Same way I did in my 20's. However I wantChat Icon

Im sure some people Chat Icon at what I wear. But if I'm comfortable in it. I'm wearing it. I truly believe if youre comfortable and confident that comes across and makes anything work.

Wear the vintage stuff. Life is too short not to wear what you want!Chat Icon
