Re: Would this policy deter you from going to a salon?

I've used the same wax person for 15 years. Canceling appts has never been a problem and while I don't cancel frequently, you can be damn sure it's happened a few times over the last 15 years for one reason or another. She actually would complain to me that she WANTS peopke to cancel (if they're sick, for example) and that some people would come to her while they were sick and contagious and she'd get sick. She actually had a sign posted to please be courteous and cancel your appt if you need to.

Anyway my point is.... I was surprised to find when I moved and tried going to a new place, that there's a $50 cancellation fee and they keep your credit card in file just in case!!! And no exceptions, apparently.

I never even bothered to make an appt after hearing that. I called to schedule and when they told me this about a EYEBROW wax, I'm like... wait so she charges you $50 if you cancel an appt that's worth like $20?

I canceled a wax appt with my previous girl a month ago because I was going through a miscarriage and had to see my doctor. Can't imagine if I had a $50 penalty for that.

I think the not canceling within 24 hours or no-show fee is fine but the 15 min late is pushing it.

Do you leave deposits for tattoo work? Not snarky I haven't had an extensive tattoo before.

As a hair stylist I would never enforce the policy for a client who is loyal and long term. I know when people get into car accidents or medical issues.

But I cannot tell you how many people have booked 3 hours processes and call the hour of their appointment and say I forgot or I'm hungover. Or don't call and we call and they say sorry I forgot at the beach can I come in next week. We do reminders day before. When someone no shows or cancels very last minute we CANNOT fill the space even with wait lists. We literally lose a lot of money and turn away clients who want to come in. Life happens but this sort of policy is for repeat offenders. 15 minutes late? Doesn't seem like a big deal but for a 30 minute appointment that means we can't take them without affecting other clients. I wouldn't charge someone for a late show but I wouldn't be able to give them the full service either

I think that of it did deter anyone, it would likely be people who tend to no-show or be late, so that's the type of customer they don't want any way.

I think the extra fee will just feel like punishment and it will probably get waived a lot anyway. IMO, the threat of losing the appointment is more likely to get people there on time - more than X minutes late and you lose your appointment and can be a walk in if there is any availability. And, if late cancellations or no shows are a big problem, maybe say 3 times (or whatever you consider repeat offender) and you are no longer able to make appointments.

As the worker on the other end it sucks and you do not get paid if someone does not show up. And I can tell you that on a nice weekend people just do not show, cancel 10 minute before an appointment. They feel like sleeping in, going to he beach, etc. They just do not care that you got up and made it on time for their appointment. Or they just had lunch with their girlfriend, show up 15 minute late, expect a full service that would mean running late for the next client. If 4 people did that in a row, you would run 1 hour behind. What about those customers that show up next on time? You just can't win. We all have had emergencies. And most places have a one time forgiveness because we all have awaken sick one day, go into a car accident, went into labor and forgot to cancel. After that the policy is fair. Those policies exist mostly because people do not show up and have no courtesy for the business or the people who offer the service...more than one time.

I think this is totally fair esp since they say true exceptions can be made. I'm sure they are not going to charge someone who is late by 18 minutes especially if they aren't repeat offenders. People need to make a living.
