The hurricane that hit Houston, TX is devastating... and they're still expecting more rain for that area for the next 4 or 5 days.
24 inches of rain in 24 hours, and another 15-25 inches expected, with a couple of isolated spots expecting up to 50 inches.

I saw an article that said emergency personnel aren't able to keep up with the number of people needing help. I just don't get it - people were warned in advance to evacuate and were told they might not get help. Why didn't they leave? Why would they put others in danger to save them when they had warning. (I'm not talking about people that have hardships when it comes to leaving - whether low income and no car or disabled). There were stories before it hit of able-bodied people getting stuff from the grocery store and telling reporters they're just going to wait it out. Seriously, did they not see stories of Katrina - where water was above the roof?
It's amazing that so many people from other states are coming to help. So far I've only seen 2 fatalities - which is pretty amazing that there haven't been more.

I may be wrong but i think by the time more people started to want to evacuate the highways were backed up

They didn't call for evacuations until many freeways were seriously flooded. Additionally, shelters won't take pets.
I have a large amount of family down there, so I'm a bit worried.

I have been watching the news since before it hit them. I was hoping so hard that they were blowing it way out of proportion. Now watching what's happening, I feel helpless. These poor people .. the poor pets 
I asked DH what's the plan if something like this hit LI? We'd ALL be screwed. So, we made a plan for this type of what if massive flooding.

Heartbreaking. The picture in the bruising home really got to me. Thank Gd they were rescued.
So many people lost everything.

With storms this massive, there aren't any perfect solutions.
If something happened on LI, I don't think I would try and evacuate. Especially here, where there is no easy way of the island. I have more supplies and resources at my house than anywhere else I could think of going.

I read an article about this the other day, basically there is no way to evacuate Long Island. The best bet would be for everyone to go stay with people that live in the middle of the island, preferably north shore, and hope for the best.

On BabyCenter people were really upset because job's were telling people that if they weren't in a mandatory evacuation zone that they had to come to work or they would be fired. Her dh works for a cable company. Her area got slammed. She hasn't updated so hoping she is ok.

My friend is a doctor down there. He did not evacuate because he is essential personnel and his home flooded. He was just rescued.

It is so horrible. No one expected the storm to loop back over land after the initial hit, that''s why Houston got hit so bad with flooding.
The pictures from the nursing home is heartwrentching, all the old ladies sitting waist deep in water.
Prayers that everyone finds help.

See I look at like, they are calling for a major storm, record breaking flooding, etc.. They may not have said to evacuate but I'm leaving before they even do.. I'm not waiting around. And if nothing happened, then, thank god but at least I got out of town.
I don't get the mentality of "waiting it out". Hello. Look at you now, you are on your rooftops waiting for help. They were saying put your SS # on your arm because most likely you'll become a statistic. That is serious!

But where do 6 million people go to? If they go to another city in Texas, the storm could just as easily change track, and hit there. Then you have an over-capacity city that is in worse shape than the city they left.
They could leave the state, but not many people have the resources to do that.
And sometimes (it's happened before), the forecast is way off, and it winds up not even making landfall, or being much milder than expected, and in hindsight, there was no need for evacuation.
Individuals may have an escape plan, but not 6 million as a group.
ETA: Did you evacuate during Sandy? Where did you go? Based on the tracking for that storm, I don't have any family that was outside of the potential track, so I would have had to find a hotel hundreds of miles away, and hope I out-guessed where the storm would hit.

My brother lives in Houston. Thankfully, still in a dry zone but he cannot get out, every road around him is flooded and closed.
The Mayor said to NOT evacuate. The fear was 6 million people would be killed in flash floods on highways when stuck in a massive traffic jam. Not ideal, but it was safer for them to shelter in place.

This is a horror. I still know of people displaced from Sandy and Sandy doesn't even compare to what is going on down there. Houston is going to be out of commission for some time. The pictures of the flooding are just shocking. I was thinking that some of my friends who were tortured by FEMA, NY Rising and their insurance agencies should put together a hotline to teach these people how to do the paperwork so they can avoid all the red tape and bs they endured to get their money and their houses rebuilt.

During Sandy, I had just like the week before gotten horribly injured where the top of my leg was not connected to the bottom of my leg by any ligaments at my knee. And yes, we evacuated to PA from NJ. It was horrible.

Not a frequent poster, but I live in Houston. Thankfully our neighborhood did not flood, but so many others have. It's is devastating.
