Go Math-am I a moron?
So my first graders came home with their math hw last week with something about a bar chart? This wasn't the bar chart I was used to. It was a bar chart for addition (and I guess subtraction too). I had no idea what the hell it was. DH came home and couldn't figure it out. DH was like where are those MBA skills? I said this is way more advanced than what I learned in managerial accounting and business analytics . I was even trying to YouTube crap and couldn't get much info. One of my kids is in gifted so he has an enrichment sheet. I was really lost. They figured it out and muddled through and hw came back next day with a check mark so I guess it was right.
Am I in the twilight zone? How are we ever gonna survive the year? It's only the beginning of September!!!

Go Math-am I a moron?
Go Math in first grade is so confusing that my colleagues and I created cheat sheets for the parents to help with homework. Wait until they do subtraction!
I will admit, there are lessons that *I* personally skip or tweak. I also switch units. Why would I teach 3d shapes and THEN teach 2d shapes? But that's the order of 11 and 12.
I don't hate it as much now that I have made it my own and I certainly don't make it my math bible!

What is Go Math?
It's the common core math program used in NYC public schools. We are in Queens. I find it very confusing! One of their kindergarten teachers has a 10 min workshop at the beginning of last year to explain how hw was to be done. If she had not had the session, no way would we have done it correctly.

Interesting. We do common core on long island too but it's called something else. I didn't find it terrible last year in 1st. But if she wasn't getting it, I had her do it the old fashioned way. Eff that. She still aced the tests. IMO as long as they can get the right answer, that is all that should matter

In GO Math you have to show the work, how they teach you, so you wouldn't ace the test doing it the old fashioned way
Makes it hard for parents to help their kids, that's for sure

yeah this must be something different her school is using. Pearson I think it's called. And it's not bad at all to be honest. She is doing subtraction and addition the old fashioned way for the most part

Re: Go Math-am I a moron?
I'm a teacher and while my district doesn't use Go Math, my home district does. I think what you're describing is a bar model. It's a way to show the relationship between numbers. So the bar model would show part + part = whole. You can ask your child's teacher for a login for think central which is the website for Go Math. It has tons of resources on it that your little one can use.

This is where GoMath and I part ways, lol. I create my own math tests. As long as they show work and have the answer, I'm happy. I don't care if they counted toes!
I also teach them a variety of ways to solve because some kids like the bar model, some like to draw pictures, some like to use a number line, some like to use tally marks, some like touch math...
Go Math goes against the multiple intelligence idea and that not all kids learn the same way. I wouldn't want to be tested on a strategy that was long and convoluted when I could get the answer faster a different way. Why should my students?

I agree. One of my sons is a visual thinker. So he needs to draw the pictures to solve the problem. wish all teachers were like you!

My kids use Go Math and I've found the website helpful for when you can't figure out what they are talking about. If your school gave you an a online password for the website, you can watch the interactive student book and it shows you how they are learning it in class.

I totally agree. I do the same except my district uses EngageNY- Math Modules
We survive because we use the pages as a workbook but I cannot teach it the way the program is- we'd be going around in circles.

Go Math-am I a moron?
True life confession: I've watched YouTube lessons for my son's Go Math HW last year. Search GoMath and whatever the lesson number is at the top of the worksheet.

Re: Go Math-am I a moron?
I found to be able to do Go Math at home, we needed those blocks that stuck into each other.
We "played" with those for a while and it made sense to the kids.

I'm impressed that you are allowed to do this as a teacher...I am not allowed to change or modify the tests...we use Math in Focus now and its so different from enVisions and our kids are struggling!
