What do you make of this?
Today I get a letter sent to my home, addressed to me with my full name and correct address.
It was from St Charles Hospital.
It was a letter thanking me for booking my surgery with them and giving me instructions on a class I have to take that is required before bariatric surgery and that I need to call and sign up for the next class on 9/20 and then I will be also given a date for my pre-op testing etc.
Now mind you, I have no surgery booked. Not even an ingrown toenail removal. Not even a gum scaling.
Nor have I ever even been a patient at St Charles Hospital in my life. I have been a patient at both Southside and Good Sam but that was years ago.
I haven't even been to a doctor in quite some time.
So I call the number and reach the coordinator and he is dumbfounded. He says all these letters usually are generated from the patient info forms of people who are booked for surgeries and he has no idea how or why I got this letter. He said he was going to check with his secretary. He was super apologetic but also very befuddled by this.
I'm a bit freaked out. Where would they get my info?

That's really strange. It could be just a weird mistake when the data entry person set up mail to go out. Your name and address was code 123 and this other person was 1231 and they left out a #? Only thing I can think of.
I would give a call to your insurance company just to be sure there isn't anyone using your identity to commit insurance fraud.

Yup...first thing I thought of.
I would definitely call your insurance company and see if anything has been sent to them. As well as put them on alert.
Someone was just arrested for using the identies of people that her job had on file to get herself cosmetic surgery.

God help me! The odd thing is all the correspondence is being sent to my address (well this one at least) so how is this person going to know that they need to go for the pre op etc. So we went online and didn't see any pending or unusual claims or pre-authorizations for surgery but I am going to call them for sure to alert them. I also let the hospital know that I am not scheduled for any surgeries so they are aware.
Wonderful

They could have some kind of online portal set up with your name and their email.
When my mom had surgery recently most relevant information was handled either by phone or through the online portal and anything she got in the mail was redundant and old.
Definitely call your ins company

Re: What do you make of this?
Even though you haven't been a patient there, maybe you saw a doctor outside of the hospital that is affiliated with them? Usually the systems are all interconnected. I remember I got a phone call from an office for my son for some appointment. We had never even been to that doctor before. But, turns out, he was seen by another doctor connected to them, and they clicked on the wrong person.

Re: What do you make of this?
Good Sam is part of CHSLI along with St. Charles... so your info could be in the CHSLI system because of that. Doesn't explain how they have you scheduled for surgery, but it could explain how your name is mixed up with St Charles even though you've never been a patient there before.

Re: What do you make of this?
So I called my insurance company just to alert them. They didn't see any claims or pre-authorizations for surgery so they weren't too concerned but they did make a note on my account that I got that strange letter and to watch for any unusual activity.
It could well be a clerical error as I am in the system for Catholic Health Services as I had surgery at Good Sam a while back.
Either way it freaked me out a bit.
So strange!
