Re: Taking recess away for incomplete homework

I'm with you, especially over a reading log.

I didn't read all the replies but I would say calmly talk to the teacher and if she doesn't budge, turn it into a teachable moment for your DC. You can say something like "I really don't like this either, but sometimes you have to go along with rules that you might not like. Let's make sure we get the log done so you don't have to miss recess again."

Re: Taking recess away for incomplete homework

I absolutely would lie about the log and I have done, especially since you said your DS is an advanced reader. He's obviously getting enough practice.

Taking away recess is just not right. And also homework for 2nd grade is completely useless anyway. All the research says there's no point to it and it does nothing for the children.

I hate what public school has become...

Re: Taking recess away for incomplete homework

To me, recess is incredibly important for young children. With that said, if your kid missed six home works I could understand that there was finally a consequence. One or two missed things, or write a note to explain what was going on and move forwards, but there does come a point where I do think a child should understand actions have consequences. So yes, after six times missing homework, then I could see the teacher taking the child to review the materials one on one during recess to make sure they understand the materials. I would be upset if the teacher took recess away after the first missed homework, but after six times, that is on the parent and the child.

To me it seemed like she said you lose recess after you miss three and now it's happening for the second time.

Yes in her first post. Twice she refers to getting a consequence bc of missing 3 homeworks.

I understand that recess is important but I don't know what options teachers really have at that age. Penalize their grade, sure but I dont think second graders should be concerned about their grades.

I write out the log for the entire week when we get it on Mondays. Then he reads the book for the day.

yes, he missed (logging it) 3 times. did not miss reading. i wrote a note explaining that. no response. twice the first week, and once the following week.

then...this week on monday, we completely forgot to read. so she marked another (1) incomplete on his log.

i since wrote an email to her & the 2nd teacher, and the 2nd teacher called me (extremely nervous) and asked if there was trouble at home.

continuously misinterpreted what i was saying in the email and on the phone more than once ( i was also asking about details for our halloween party in the email and over the phone to which she was not prepared to answer yet ).

it was like, she had this notion of what she perceived I was communicating between the lines without actually reading what I actually wrote in the email. I said I didn't agree that it was good for my child, and I specifically asked "Please let me know another way for him to make up for incomplete homework other than taking recess away".

While she didn't directly answer that, she did clarify that it was ok to log books we read during the prior weekend into the week's log. She also took him to into the hallway that day during class to explain this to him privately, and because he was so nervous about her taking him into the hallway, he heard nothing she said.

Re: Taking recess away for incomplete homework

I think you and your child have gotten off on the wrong foot with his teacher based on your last update. I would ask for an in person meeting with the teacher to talk and get on the same page. It is a month into the school year, so I would want to get it right before more things go wrong and she takes it out on your kid. If she is asking if there are problems at home, to me, that means she is thinking she might call CPS on you. I would nip this in the bud and get ahead of more problems.

They check the reading log every day? DS has a weekly log, due the next Monday. Sometimes we don't fill it in until Sunday night. If it's a daily log, just make it up. It's obviously causing more stress than its worth and it is NOT helping your child improve his reading skills.

I think it's a huge leap to say the teacher is thinking of calling CPS. I think she is asking, because kids not doing their homework IS an indicator of something going on at home, or lack of parental support. But, not worthy of calling CPS for.

Agreed. I think she's asking bc sometimes there are things going on at home that affect everyone and lead to things like missed hw (job change, sick family member, change in child care situations, and a million other possibilities). Perhaps she's just trying to understand the situation, see if any support is needed, see if your son needs some extra leniency. I don't mean that in a prying way but as a teacher sometimes you've been riding a student about their lack of performance and then find out that it's the last thing on their mind for good reason. I also think saying the teacher is going to take a disagreement out on your kid is a leap. Sounds like she's trying to help him see that she supports him and wants to come up with a solution but I think taking him in the hallway to do so maybe wasn't the best move. Maybe that's her norm when she wants to talk privately with a student, second graders are very good at eavesdropping.

If my son was doing the work I would make it a priority to log it. It's not the teachers fault (unless the rule wasn't stated ahead of time). Writing a note to the teacher/principal probably takes more energy and time than marking the log.
IMO recess should be taken away when a student misses homework 3x. I think that's more than fair considering school only started 5 weeks ago.

Re: Taking recess away for incomplete homework

lol. Nah, she never saw the original note I sent in. So she had no idea. I didn't explain that in the email because I assumed she saw the note I sent in.

I'm with all of you saying this is one of those times where - you just fill it in to appease the teach. Some teachers are stuck in their ways, not open to communicating about outside the box education - that's cool. I understand. Just gotta roll with it, or go to more board of ed. meetings.

I got lucky last year. Teacher was like, he doesn't do his homework, no biggie. But it might be an issue with other teachers.

Ahhh so this isn't an isolated issue this year. Honestly I would nip that problem in the bud because homework in middle and high school accounts for a large portion of their grades. No one likes homework, but if the teacher sends it home, it needs to get done.

Weeeelllll, it more like:

We don't get some of the math.
-no biggie, just write a question mark on it, and we'll go over it again in class. I'm not about making homework frustrating. But other teachers might not be so...open for discussion.

There was open communication.

But i get your point :)

And again, it wasn't for a lacking of doing it, it was just the way we did it this year was different, there were no penalty's for writing it daily of writing it at the end of the week. There were no penalty's. Just open discussion.

I feel like I'm beating a dead horse here.

While I don't believe in homework, we're not against it. We do it. But to nix recess over it - i'm not about that, and she's not open to discuss it, and I couldn't' tell why until reading your responses, and the lack of hers.

Taking recess away for incomplete homework

I for one am completely against homework at the elementary level. It serves no purpose. I have a first grader with special needs. Homework is a source of battle every day. 5 minutes worth of homework costs us 2 hours of family time. Screaming, hitting, tearing papers, tears, etc. He knows the work and is above grade level. He can read. But when I say homework, it is like a bomb.

But for us, recess gets taken away for a lot of reasons.

I guess the teacher knows that taking away recess is one thing that will really hit home with the parents and the kids, so maybe that is why they do it. To make it sink in that homework needs to get done.. I really don't know what the other "punishment" is when kids don't do their homework. In high school they just potentially fail the class, but it's elementary school. Like someone else said, a reflection of it on the report card, or a poor grade...neither of which I'm sure they or the parents probably care about.

Re: Taking recess away for incomplete homework

This may be controversial but I hate recess. My kids are in 5th and 3rd and I have found that recess is absolute bedlam. It's the time of day when kids feelings are hurt, or sometimes they wander with no one to play with, "bullying", cliques, or learn things they shouldn't. And yes, I know, social development, blah blah, teachable moment but in mine and my friends' experiences there has been a lot of tears over recess and I wish it was better supervised/more structured.

With respect to taking away recess, I am all for consequences, in whatever form they take. Unfortunately, I know way too many adults that don't understand the concept of actions having consequences so I am all for teaching my kids that lesson often and while young.

We had something like this in first grade, but it was homework that took 5 minutes to complete. Kid would do it during recess if it was forgotten... and then go join their friends (it was good for my son to have responsibilities and consequences).

If I were you... I would change my schedule slightly and do the log either first thing home or even last thing in the AM before school.

I wouldn't complain to the teacher or principal yet. While I agree that a reading log may not be the best way to promote reading... I think promoting homework completion is a good start for later.

This is what I meant by my post, especially your last paragraph. Kids learn good habits from a young age, by the time they are 10, 11 and up forget it. To add: if the child knows they are suppose to complete H.W and other kids are and they are not... kids notice things like this and kids do talk :) and see who is playing and who is not. It wouldn't be fair for someone else s child to have to miss recess and not the posters. Rules are rules. I find parents like rules until it affects their child. From my experience in hearing storys.

I completely agree with this however, what bothers me in this day and age is that the kids are penalized for stuff that really falls on the parents. And I don't really remember my mom having to do shit when I was this age and she wouldn't have done shit, so I would have been penalized all the time. I don't know what kind of kids you all have by my 2nd graders are not responsible enough to take out their homework and do it all themselves. I have to sit there and do all of it with them. The amount of involvement that parents have to have these days is insane if you ask me and that's a HUGE part of the problem with kids these days. Middle and high school students having parents involved in their homework? It's ridiculous. Give the kids one sheet of homework a night that they can do on their own and be responsible for in second grade and that would teach them some responsibility. Giving mass amounts of homework and a reading log (which is what my kids get) is just creating more work for the parents. It always makes me wonder if these teachers have their own kids and more than just one. I have a kindergartener, 2nd grader and 4th grader and between all the homework and after school activities my house is a complete shit show after school. I wish my kids had time to just sit on their iPads for a few minutes and RELAX! We don't even have time to turn on the TV after school if we wanted to!

All I know is my kids love reading. They love new books and stories. But, when they are forced to read it’s a damn battle and they despise the reading log. Chat Icon

I used to fill it in but the teachers want them to write it now (1st grade) so l tell them it’s ok we can write a book you read Saturday and they argue with me-no that’s wrong, we have to read a book tonight so I say ok fine and then they wine and ***** for 20 minutes how tired they are and why do they have to do the reading log and we go round and round like this. It’s maddening.Chat Icon
