When a house meets your needs
In almost all ways (size, price, area, etc.) but the taxes are higher than you are looking to pay (not a crazy amount but by couple thousand more), what do you do? Scrap it or make an appointment to go see it anyway? There are a couple of houses that are higher than we want to be in taxes (we want to stay under $10k, these houses are $11k-$13k). I know in the grand scheme of home buying 1-3k over what we are expecting isn't much but we prefer to stay under $10k with the realistic expectation that taxes go up and we'd rather start out on the lower end. What should we be asking the realtor in terms of tax grievances, etc.?

Re: When a house meets your needs
realtor cant really say much in regards to grieving. I wouldnt rely on a tax grievance though. if you really cant swing the extra couple thousand, i wouldnt waste my time. but if the house is exactly what youre looking for, i would try and make it work.
i would go see it

I don't know where you're looking but you might not have many options under $10k. So I would say if you find a house you live that's 13k in taxes, go for it!

I think taxes also depend where. Out in Suffolk by me, many homes in my area and the surrounding areas are 8-12k depending on the house! If you can find a house you LOVE and swing it, I would go for it!

I think it would depend a lot on how it compares to the competition. Passing on a house that's 1k over your max of everything else is pushing 10k anyway seems silly. On the other hand if you're talking 13k and there are feasible options for more like 8k I don't know if I could stomach it.
My taxes are very low and the idea of paying a thousand or more a month forever is the exact reason why we'll probably never move.

Re: When a house meets your needs
The only thing the realtor would be able to reasonably tell you is if the property taxes have been grieved.
Don't depend on a grievance to lower the taxes - tax rates go up every year so even if you are able to get your assessment reduced, it may do nothing to lower the tax bill because of an increase in the tax rate.

When a house meets your needs
Taxes go up—if you cannot feel comfortable with the amount when you buy the home it is best to look for a property in your price range. The first year I lived in my house we were sent a bill with a $2500 tax increase- I grieved the increase and ended up with a $500 increase—it is to be expected.

Re: When a house meets your needs
Taxes will always go up. With that said, we did increase our budget to include homes with slightly higher taxes. We got the home we wanted, in the district we wanted. Do I love our tax rate, not one bit. Do I love my home, yes, every day.

if it's 11k, you'd get around 1k off for the basic STAR reduction. Will grieving, even less. Grieving takes a year or so though, but my taxes went from 11,500 to 8,500 last year and it was the first time we grieved. We went though maidenbaum, and couldn't be happier with the result

I'd at least look at it. If I could afford the difference i'd considering going for it if I absolutely loved it.

You pay 40% of the amount they save you each year. Last year, it was a big amount that we owed, but this year won't be nearly as expensive. If they only save us $500 this year, we'll owe around $200

You only get a big reduction the first time. After that people tend to get the same reduction. If your are on Facebook join Jeff gold's group. He gives easy instructions to do it yourself.
