Can't get a mammogram if still breastfeeding?
I wanted to get a mammogram, but the place I was going to get it at said they can't do it until at least 6 months after I stop breastfeeding. Is this always the case? Has anyone ever had one while still nursing and if so, where?

I can't imagine you would want one while breastfeeding- it would be very painful. I would suggest a song,,but with engorged breasts, that may not even be able to give a clear picture. What did your doctor say?

Why would you want one? Unless it's for diagnostic purposes you should wait since your breasts are the denses they will ever be right now and they won't get a clear picture and the denseness could actually be hide something from the imaging. So unless you found a lump, which I hope is not the case, I can't see how your doctor is recommending one right now.

I’m a little surprised by these responses. I had looked into this and read that it’s fine to get a mammogram while breastfeeding as long as it’s read by a radiologist experienced with reading the scans of lactating mothers. If it were me, I’d nurse or pump right before going so you breasts are as emptied as possible, and then I heard you should pump and dump after, not sure for how long though.
I was actually JUST reading last night how important it is to not ignore breast health just because you’re pregnant or nursing. Just a thought. If you’d feel better going, I wouldn’t not go just because you’re nursing. You can find more info if you look it up on the LLL website or kellymom.

Few doctors would feel comfortable reading a mammo under these circumstances. You will basically be guaranteed additional testing and thus have to deal with the stress and cost that goes along with it. Just something to keep in mind. Furthermore, a baseline mammo done while breastfeeding would not be able to be used for future comparisons.
OP, why are they sending you for a mammo? Is it a routine one or is there a concern?

I haven't seen my Dr yet. Have an appt. tomorrow with my regular physician because I have been having pain in one breast for a couple weeks now. I don't think it's related to breastfeeding. A couple months ago (before I was feeling this pain ) a representative from the new walk in mammo place at the mall was trying to get new customers and I was going to make an appt. But when I said I was still BFing she said I had to wait 6 months after fully weaning. At that point I wasn't concerned though. I'll just see what my Dr. says tomorrow
I'm assuming that obviously they won't make me wait 6 months if there is actually a good reason for the test. I'm hoping it's just something silly like a clogged duct or pulled muscle from carrying my heavy toddler around, but I want to have as thorough testing done as possible since my mom passed away from breast cancer fairly young

I get yearly mammograms since I was 30 since I have a strong history of breast cancer. My dr said to do the checks I do on myself monthly but they won’t send me for my yearly tests till I wean. Zwanger said the same as they will have issues with the readings.
