Vision Therapy

Hi all,

Anyone have a child that has done vision therapy? If so, did you find it to be successful? At what age did they start?

Also, anyone have a Dr. they could recommend?

Thank you so much!

Dr Valle in Commack is amazing! I was given the option to do vision therapy in her office with her, or she would give me exercises at home and see how that worked out. Sadly my son would not qualify for vision therapy at school. We are doing exercises at home right now because our insurance does not cover it. But we have had nothing but great experiences with her and her staff.

We go to her also...it helped my daughter but didn't solve her problems. Due to her diagnosis through dr valle, she gets accommodations at school, which helps tremendously.

Re: Vision Therapy

My daughter is 7 and will be starting vision therapy next week. We are using Dr. Susan Fisher in Westbury, right across from Eisenhower Park. She came recommended. This is all new to me, I didn't even know vision therapy was such a thing until a few months ago. It seems her issue is treatable and correctable. We will see how it goes. Hoping ins. will cover some of the cost- it is pretty $$$. We will see how it goes.....

My daughter has been doing vision therapy for a few weeks, i'm not sure it's helping much yet, but I have heard great success stories. We currently go to Dr. Fisher's office but we are actually looking for a second opinion and somewhere new to go. It's not covered by insurance so it's $85 per session. They originally told us about 10-12 sessions and now they are saying it could be 10-20. Not thrilled.

I don't think it's covered under my insurance either. UGH!

How old is your DD? I was told if I get a diagnosis I can qualify through the school district. I'm still in the early stage, so I'm not 100% sure how everything works.

GOOD LUCK and thank you for the feedback!

My DD is 7, she's in second grade. Out district doesn't offer any type of vision therapy services. They originally thought it was an OT issued and for that she would have qualified for services. Not this though.

Thanks- Good luck I hope it all works out!!

Re: Vision Therapy

My daughter has been in vision therapy for about a year now. She started vision therapy after a bad concussion sustained playing gym at school. She has likely always had some issues with convergence insufficiency and such, but the issues became way more pronounced post-concussion.

Vision therapy has been helpful, along with the prism glasses they prescribed for her. We still have a long road ahead of us, but my daughter is also older (13 now, started at 12), so that may be part of the issue with it taking so long... aside from the fact that she had a bad concussion. She is back on the high honor roll at school. But VT is not a quick, overnight fix. It takes time to re-train the pathways and such.

We see Dr. Z at Twin Forks Optometry in Riverhead. They are wonderful there... love love love them!!

Good luck! If you have any questions, PM me and I can try to answer or share more of our story.

I called and got these quotes for vision therapy
500-700 for initial evaluation
165$ - for each therapy session

Is this the norm, or should I look around?

Re: Vision Therapy

What were the symptoms people were seeing that encouraged you to have vision tested?

Yikes! I was quoted $375 for the initial evaluation, which included the evaluation and a follow up to go over results.
Not sure how much the therapy session is, but I read it can be anywhere from $80-$175 (national figure).

The $165 seems to be in the NY range. I have an apt next week. I'll let you know how much I'm quoted for the sessions.

How long is the therapy session for $165? An 60 or 30 mins? Also, from my findings ask about doing therapy at home IE: homework. You may be able to do therapy at home with less in office visits.
