Speech Therapy?
I would like to get my 2.5 year old evaluated for speech. My ped recommended it last week at her 2.5 year visit and I just had a meeting at DD's preschool and she also suggested it.
How do I get the process moving for this? We live in Nassau County and the ped gave me the names of 2 places to call...
Kids Therapy and Multilingual Developmental Agency. Anyone have experience with either of this or do you have another one you recommend?
ANd how does this work? You call and they send someone to evaluate my daughter?
Any insight would be helpful.
TIA!

You should call the county and request an evaluation. If they do the evaluation and your child does not qualify for services through the county you should also look at your insurance and see what coverage you have.

Re: Speech Therapy?
What kind(s) of speech issues do you think your daughter is having? I would start with Early Intervention through the county, as others have said. They will give you a list of providers that are eligible to evaluate your child. However, if it is purely an articulation issue, E.I. will not provide services. It can't hurt to get the eval done though. If she doesn't qualify for E.I. but the evaluators feel there is an articulation issue, they may suggest going through the school district, once age eligible. This happened with my daughter. Her only issue was artic; receptive language and cognitive skills were high so she didn't qualify for E.I. but ended up qualifying through the school district. We're in Suffolk though so no advice on those two companies you mentioned for the eval.

Re: Speech Therapy?
Contact your county. They will meet with you, do a social history and give you the list of evaluating agencies. Kidz therapy is on the list, ans is excellent. EI is up to age 3, and doesn’t cover articulation (because poor artic is still the norm for the age group). But poor expressive and receptive language skills otherwise would qualify your child. If language is the only area of concern, your child has to be 2 standard deviations below the average ( which falls about the 2nd percentile) to qualify. If they don’t qualify, they may through private insurance. Once your child is 3, the school district takes over, and artic IS included (although an agency still does the testing/services - the district just manages and makes decisions).

Re: Speech Therapy?
When is your child's birthday and what are your concerns? Usually by 2.5 they are looking towards evaluation by the district. Children age out of EI by there third birthday unless they have been evaluated by the district and found eligible to receive services then they can continue in EI until August of December depending on where their birthday falls.
Generally EI does not approve for articulation but that is not always the case. I depends on how it impacts their speech. Also it is easier to get approved through EI.

Re: Speech Therapy?
Call your county's EI number. Then you pick from a list of agencies to do the eval.
