Low iron

Here’s a fun one ...

I had blood done about 6 months ago. Everything was ok other then activated Epstein Barr and high ferritin levels.

I was at the dr last week (tested + for flu) and needed new thyroid meds. So she took blood. Decided to do a full panel instead of just thyroid. I called the office for results because I really need my thyroid refill and the woman tells me dr wants me to make an appointment to go over my results because my iron was very low and also advises for an echo and stress test if I haven’t had one recently.

I had an echo at his office 2 months ago (showed small leak in mitral valve which i have never had before at any other cardiologists - they said to have one yearly to watch it)

I asked her if having the FLU can cause a false reading on my blood - she has no idea. I ask if dr can please call me to go over results and answer my questions because I just got over the flu and don’t want to go there and pick another virus up just to talk to him. “I’ll pass the message along but he usually doesn’t do that. You have to come in “

Wwyd?

Is this dr being money /test hungry ?? Take a chance and go in to discuss ? Wait a few weeks and get new blood work?
I’m at a loss and very frustrated.

I hate having to go into the office to get results. Seriously, they can talk on the phone and send any scripts or referrals electronically. I would push to handle it by phone if you don't need any physical exam.
I think there are some supplements that can affect iron levels. If you started taking anything new,I would look them up.

I have extremely low iron levels and get infusions multiple times a year to treat. I have never been told to have a stress test or an echo because of it. I also have a PFO.
But iron is a sticky thing. It can mess with you and a number of things can affect absorption of supplements.

Re: Low iron

I'd call again to ask for the thyroid refill, and to do a repeat blood test at a later date.

If you have to go to the office, then wear a face mask to reduce your risk of picking up something airborne.

If your levels are low enough to need Infusions and you don’t need those added tests - t has to be about copays for them. They do those tests in office.

I think it’s time to change drs AGAIN

Is this Doctor your regular Practitioner?

I would continue to call until he returns your call and have him answer your questions over the phone.

Suggest you re-do your iron to compare.

If you are concerned about the iron levels, make an appt with a hematologist. They can do basic tests in office and let you know if you need further eval. My regular docs normally don't even look at my iron levels because I am so out of whack.

I just HAVE to ask--- your PCP isnt in Bellmore is it? I had a horrible time getting a dr to speak to me at a particular practice in Bellmore after I had an MRI. The Nurses called me and when I said I still wanted the physician to call me directly so I could speak to her, they basically said no, we can answer questions, what do you need....and she never called me back. I switched practices.

No. They are in Babylon. They do so much testing on site. Which i liked because I can take care of a lot there. BUT now it seems they want to run these tests every second and bill my Insurance company. I understand medicate and Medicaid doesn’t pay - but that doesn’t mean you have to make me get extra testing and go in for appointments so you can bang out mine!

I am furious
