Medication for PMS Anxiety
I am in my mid 40's ..probably peri menopausal. I get extra anxious and moody .. yell more at the kids. I have been taking fluoxetine / zoloft but not working. What do you take if you take anything at all?

Re: Medication for PMS Anxiety
I take xanax. Dr. wanted me to go on zoloft but it's really only right before AF and right after (sometimes at ovulation) and I didn't want to be on something daily for something that only happens a couple times a month. I've always reacted to my hormonal shifts. Just now, at 40 years old, those shifts cause anxiety. My OBGYN offered birth control for it because then my hormones will be the same all month (and also for heavy bleeding) - but I declined.
Acupuncture helped a lot as well but it gets too expensive. So Xanax it is. Low dose .25. It stops the heart palps and everything that goes with the anxiety. I also drink decaf coffee during that time too

Re: Medication for PMS Anxiety
Like Phyliss I realized I have to to decaf coffee and I also take melatonin at night to help sleep (I only need it a few days before my period). In my case I was anxious for no real reason and would be worse at night and then I wouldn't sleep and would then have a terrible day. Before I pinpointed the problem I was also worrying myself because I didn't know why I was worried.
I feel much better now.
I also do yoga once a week!

Who prescribes this? Gyno? PCP? Psych?
I've been going to a therapist for over a year now and I still experience anxiety right around my period. I can literally pin it down to which days it happens every month. After doing so much in therapy, I feel like I'm hitting a roadblock and she had suggested looking at medications but I don't want to take something every day for something that occurs a few days a month. Taking xanax a few days a month hadn't occurred to me but I think it would work!

I got it from my PCP. At times when I have run out, I took Benedryl at night so I could sleep. My old PCP was very understanding (being a woman too) and totally agreed it would help and it does. I stopped seeing her and the new dr I saw refused to give me script and told me I need to see a psychiatrist for it! I was like ummmm for PMS related anxiety? Really??? So He’s a jerk. Just started with new practice. Hopefully when I need my refill, he doesn’t pull the same crap.
