A Wrinkle in Time

Has anyone gone out to see this movie?? We went yesterday and I left disappointed on the message it left. I do overthink things so I'm wondering if I'm doing the same here.

What message did you think it gave? I brought my kids and was caught up in a work email during the beginning and missed a bunch, which led to me being somewhat confused. 2/3 of my kids didn't like it and the other one just loves going to any movie so she's not the best critic.

Re: A Wrinkle in Time

My DH took my 11 and 8 year old this past weekend...their reaction was "so so" My 8 year old said it was sad - my 11 year old said its not suitable for kids under 8 as it is a bit scary. They described it as "weird" but good...but not as good as Peter Rabbit :)

So the parents are scientist and the father transported to a different planet for 4 years. No one knows his whereabouts and after 4 years with the help of others the kids go out and look for him. At the end, his son is under a spell or whatever you want to call it and he's now mean rude little kid. The father and his daughter have the chance to transport back to planet Earth but would have to leave the son behind. The father wanted to force his daughter to leave but she said she wouldn't leave her brother behind.
That's the problem I have with this movie. As a mother, I can't understand how he would choose her over him. And yes I know, he was only 1 when he disappeared but still no excuse. And even if I have to die trying, I will not leave my child behind. I honestly really hated this movie more so that I spent over $100 on it. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: A Wrinkle in Time

So I started to read the book with my kids in anticipation of the movie, but I did not finish reading it to them. I did read it to myself. I hated the book. In the book the father worked for the government, and was working on a top secret project called a tessract. He used that to be unwittingly transported to another planet that was controlled by a disenbodied brain. It was a mean brain that forced conformity and took over everyone. If you were not perfect you were re educated or killed. The father was trapped and the kids meet three star witches that help transport them to the other planet. The young boy sacrifices himself for his father by letting the brain merge with his own brain. The daughter rescues her father at the expense of the brother. They leave, and go to another planet, and then the daughter, by herself goes back to rescue her younger brother.

I thought the book was terrible. As a parent, I would never leave any child behind. I thought it was inappropriate for young children. The book was scary.

So the movie is a little different but same, the father leaves the son behind to save himself and tries to take his daughter but she won't leave her brother behind. I thought for a Disney movie, it gives the wrong example. Imagine a kid that feels left out watching this movie?? He would think his parents would do the same to him.

My daughter told me today that the teacher was reading this aloud in class, but the majority of the class hated it, so they are picking another book.

It is weird. I read in in elementary & remembered liking, but not really what it was about. I re-read it for a college course on fantasy literature, but still don't remember (I may have skimmed.)
I tried re-reading it now, because I kept seeing the commercials for the movie & couldn't remember the book, but I can't really get in to it.
