Area rug - sizing help

How do you know what size area rug to buy for a room? The living room in the house I am buying is basically 15' x 14'. So, would I get an 8 x 10 rug or a 9 x 12 rug? How do you know what would fit/look best? Should the rug go partly under the couch? This seems so confusing for some reason!

You can't really go wrong with an area rug unless it's grossly undersized for a huge room, IMO.

I personally like when they go under furniture, which helps them from moving around the room. If you're trying to cut a room in half, for example, then I'd go smaller.

What other furniture will you have in the room?

I’d go with 8x10 because I don’t like when the rug goes under the furniture.
It’s really personal preference

If you have a room in your house now about the size , you can put blankets down in the 2 sizes and see how it looks

We had an 5x7 and it didnt go under the furniture. The couches made funny sliding noises on the floor all the time. We just bought a new 8x10 so that it would go under the couches. I just dont want that damn sound anymore Chat Icon

The rug should always go under the furniture. Otherwise it looks like it’s floating. So you won’t know until you place furniture

This. Look on Pinterest for ideas. You’ll have to layout your furniture first and then measure to see what would look best.

Still thinks it’s a matter of preference. If you go by #1, you may as well have w2w carpet. And #2 messes with my ocd and artistic eye. I go #3 all day in the living room.
Rules shmules hahaha
