Quick WWYD poll re: traveling with toddlers
We are renting a car next week on our trip. I need a booster and 2 car seats. I'm going to bring my older son's booster because that's no big deal. I really didn't want to bring the other 2's car seats but to rent them is $20/day EACH so that's going to add up quick. It's such PITA dealing with car seats but I don't know if the $40/day is worth the convenience of not lugging them. WWYD?

Ugh that's a tough one, but I'd probably check them both if it's logistically possible. Mostly because I worry about the rented seats- the quality of them. I think it's free to check car seats? Is that wrong?

I would rent them. Those car seats are heavy to be carrying around. Plus I've heard the baggage people are not so gentle with them when checking them. Imagine them throwing them onto the plane and getting damaged.

Yes it's free. I've done this 3 times now and I'm doing it again on Wednesday. We have 2 car seats and a booster as well. I have bags that they go in with straps like a back pack. It's a little heavy sometimes, but it's really not that bad. You can check them at the counter, but I prefer to bring them to the gate of the plane. It would cost more than our rental to rent 3 car seats!

I know! That's the thing! I said to DH we could buy 2 new car seats for what it will cost to rent them!

Yes, this too! This is such an annoying situation. And why is it so expensive to rent a freaking car seat?

I gate checked my car seats once and wouldn't bother again. They get beat up (when they brought them up to us, the bag was broken). Not to mention how heavy they are to lug around with your kids and your luggage. Do you have AAA; it looks like hertz offers 1 free car seat

Re: Quick WWYD poll re: traveling with toddlers
I’ve bought car seats to travel with and we use them as spares. Evenflo and Cosco make an inexpensive, extremely light car seat that runs $45-50. It’s cheaper than renting. We have bought them at times of traveling (down in FL) and then have carried them with us on subsequent trips. I’ve never had an issue with them being poorly handled when gate checked, but we do fly pretty much only JetBlue, and have been able to use them for kids to sit in on plane too.
I tried to rent once. I couldn’t. Car seat looked so dirty... and I’m not a neat freak.

I would probably rent. If i didnt rent i might buy those really cheap Cosco seats, check them (only if it was free) and then toss them out prior to returning. I wouldnt want my good seats getting ruined on the plane.

This reminds me that I think I have a cosco and a Britax that someone gave me. I think they may be expired. Would it be super bad to use the expired seats and then just toss them?

You could buy one at walmart for $40.. that's crazy. I'd probably just check my own.

Re: Quick WWYD poll re: traveling with toddlers
I would definitely check the seats with the luggage. We have and have never had an issue. Lugging car seats around an airport is a pain. I wouldn't pay 40/day for seats
Are you sure they are charging by the day for the seats - that seems crazy

Re: Quick WWYD poll re: traveling with toddlers
I would rent. I traveled to Florida last year with 3 car seats and I swore never again. It was an enormous hassle and one I will never ever repeat. But either way it kind of stinks.

We only have one kid,but we lugged our Chicco NextFit around the airport and installed it on the plane. They have roll on attachments to make it easier to lug the car seat around. If we traveled again, we’d get one of those.

Rent. the time we rented the car seat was brand new and cleaner and in better condition than our own.
I can't deal with lugging extra shit when we travel. I can barely deal with the bags.

If you have AAA you can get a free car seat rental with Hertz.

Quick WWYD poll re: traveling with toddlers
most car rental companies use the cosco seat that is $40 from Walmart. I bought the cosco seats they are light weight and check for free - don't buy a bag- just latch the tether to the bottom and throw over shoulder- I traveled with 3 for a long time. The ones from the rental company were not that clean and you don't know if they have been in an accident

Do not check in at all.
I would bring them on the plane or buy one when you get there or rent one (though renting you can guarantee that there weren't in an accident)
ETA: checking a car seat can cause problems because they throw them around the seat can most likely get damaged.

How would you go about buying one down there? How would you get to the store if you don't have car seats? It's not like they sell car seats in the airport.

this is true this would only work if someone could bring you them when you got there I didn't really think about that.
Really then you should just bring them on the plane.

Re: Quick WWYD poll re: traveling with toddlers
I too was going to suggest AAA and Hertz. I've paid more for a car (slightly) but the savings on a car seat made it worth it.

There is no way I'm doing that! I get pissed watching people try to shove their crap in the over head compartment so I can't imagine how people will feel being held up because my fat ass is in the middle of the aisle while I'm trying to install a car seat! I'm either checking with my luggage or renting. I'm not lugging the car seats around an airport and then installing them on the plane. That is madness. Thinking about uninstalling/reinstalling in the truck alone is making me sweat!
