Talk to me about Sleepaway camps

Considering for my son who will be 10 next summer. This summer he's doing day camp.

I went back when I was 10 till I was 14 years old and had the best time and memories.
I think he'd love it!
I am looking at Camp Nockamixen and the Y camps.
Anyone have any they'd recommend? Planning on going to check some out this summer.

Yes. A Jewish sleep away. Reform.

I had a few locals suggest Surprise Lake. Thanks!

I have contacts there if you need, we go often
They have a Facebook page too :) I am not sure if it is reform but I do know it is kosher and they have Friday nigh services
It’s a beautiful camp

Re: Talk to me about Sleepaway camps

Just want to echo Surprise Lake Camp! I was a camper for 4 summers, staff for 3, and I even met my husband there! I believe it is technically a conservative camp but I am reform. We had shabbat services friday night and saturday morning and quick prayers before and after every meal. They have upgraded a lot since I've been a camper with an inground pool, large indoor gym for rainy days, etc. It is the oldest jewish sleepaway camp in america (opened in 1902) and a wonderful place to spend summers. I can't wait till my little ones are old enough to attend.

I have a few friends whose kids go to Nah Jee Wah and they love it.
My sister went to and worked at Camp Emanuel in the Berkshires.
A lot of people I know went to and will be sending their kids to Kinder Ring

Looking into this one. DH's cousins go there now and I went to Cedar Lake when I was younger. I like that they do a try it out week.

I think they all do a free rookie day as well as at least a rookie weekend. We're not sending my daughter for a couple of years but I may still do the rookie day this summer just to see it

They do a day where you can visit for the day. Your child will go off and see what it's like to be a "camper" there and the adults get a tour. A lot don't do a try it out week or few days. The one my neighbors go to and a lot of locals sounds terrific, but it is 7 weeks. They don't do a try it out weekend or week. Just a day. I hear amazing things about the camp, but not sure I can just start out with 7 weeks. LOL

Surprise lake offers "get your feet wet" - 5 day program at the end of summer to give kids the chance to try it out. Both my kids did it and then my daughter went back the following summer for two weeks.
