Vision Therapy?
I know I read somethibg about vision therapy on LIF. If your DC had vision therapy, how did you know they needed it? Did you look into on your own or did an opthalmologist or other professional recommend it? I was just looking for an opthalmologist online and stumbled on a vision therapy place. A couple of the symptoms they mentioned could apply to my DD. But, could also be normal for her age.

Vision Therapy?
I did it has a child. My mom was told to have my eyes checked when I was in K. I was prescribed glasses and vision therapy. I went once a week for years. She took me to an opthamologist who provided the service.

Re: Vision Therapy?
I didn't know until the doctor we saw suggested it...I knew that something was wrong with how my daughter was reading, but I honestly didn't know what (and I am a special education teacher). I realized that my daughter was an incredibly accurate reader who comprehended everything at high levels (significantly above grade level) but read incredibly slow. We went to Dr. Valle in Commack and she diagnosed her with a few visual disorders and recommended glasses (even though she has 20/20 vision - to reduce visual fatigue) and vision therapy. The vision therapy improved her reading speed, but it isn't near what it should be even with the therapy. She also recommended seeking out a 504 plan, which has helped so much. She gets a lot of accommodations and modifications at school now and has access to assistive technology beyond what the other students use. She is also receiving service with the vision specialist this year to learn to touch type proficiently, as this will benefit her as she gets older.
All in all, I am glad that we did the vision therapy, though it was not a fix to her issues.

Vision Therapy?
We use Dr. Susan Fisher in Westbury, by Eisenhower Park. She is a low vision specialist and provides vision therapy. She is great.

Vision Therapy?
My LO just started vision therapy. My recommendation is to make an appt with a Developmental Optometrist. Most kids with 20/20 vision (as stated in pp) could still have vision deficiencies that a regular optometrist or ophthalmologist wouldn't catch.
I brought my LO for a regular eye exam (since school is starting soon) and the ophthalmologist said there was something there, but couldn't pin point it. I came across vision therapy in my research and I made an appt with a VTOD. It's been amazing so far.
My LO had a hard time: catching a ball, clumsy, cautious on stairs, had no interest in crafts (coloring or writing), hated puzzles, hated sports, no hand dominance, etc. All this and has 20/20 vision.
In older kids some symptoms would be (in addition to above) slow or fatigued reader, head slant when watching TV, dislikes reading (but enjoys being read to), AD(H)D, struggle to do easy homework, sloppy handwriting (writes on a slant), struggles with math and spelling, and obvious misaligned eyes.
I joined an awesome group on FB. Vision Therapy Parents Unite. You would be amazed on what you can learn!!
FYI- My LO is 5.
PM with any questions. Good luck!
