Roundup Weed Killer found in Cheerios and Quaker Oats

Has everyone heard about this? My kid eats so much Cheerios - for breakfast, late night snack.. I thought I was doing the right thing. Then I read this. Is everyone throwing there Cheerios and other related cereals out?? If it was so dangerous wouldn't they take them off the shelves? I don't know what to do.

The article can be found here or on any google search http://fortune.com/2018/08/15/roundup-in-cheerios-weed-killer/

Oh no - the article I read mentioned Quaker Oats, not Cheerios. We go through boxes a week, it’s one of the like 5 foods my daughter eats

Re: Roundup Weed Killer found in Cheerios and Quaker Oats

How did it get in there? Was it that the crops were sprayed with roundup?

If that is the case, then shouldn't it be in everything we eat that isn't organic?

I'm confused by this

Like I'm wondering about the other stuff they haven't tested- pastas?
Or other brands of cereal and oatmeal?
It can't be exclusive to these items and brands

There's some useful info on this Snopes site:

https://www.snopes.com/news/2018/08/17/cancer-juries-scientific-certainty-monsanto-roundup-ruling-explained/

Basically, a jury of civilians, with no knowledge of carcinogens, chemicals, etc, decided that Mansanto was guilty of having glyphosate (and other chemicals) in a lot of foods, which the jury determined was the cause of the prosecutor's client's cancer.
Many scientists disagree with that determination.

Yes wheat is sprayed with it ... produce is probably just as bad!

Right so why the sudden shock? This stuff is probably in everything we eat and they just happened to test these few products.
But it's been known for years that this is what they are using.

From what I have read Round Up isn’t unsafe. Most studies lead to it being safe. I do find it weird that it’s in cereal. But if you feel better throwing out the cereal, then do just that. But your kids are probably safe.

IMO, organic isn’t necessarily better. It hurts the environment more, and there is nothing special about it.

It's in cereal because the wheat is sprayed with it.
I'm sure it's been in cereal since they started using it.
Again, not sure why the sudden shock.
I also believe I read somewhere that in order for it to be harmful to a human you'd have to be eating like 300 lbs of whatever it is sprayed on per day.

Re: Roundup Weed Killer found in Cheerios and Quaker Oats

Glyphosate is not safe, if you breathe it in or get it on your skin. Basically if you are a farmer or a groundskeeper who use it on a regular basis, you need to protect yourself.
But the amounts found in the cereal is so negligible, it would be highly doubtful that someone could get the cancer associated with glyphosate from eating cereal.
Cereal contains bugs too. Part of processing the grain.

And KlingKlang is correct, organic is not always the better choice.
You need to know HOW the fields the crops are grown in are fertilized. Crops deplete the nutrients in the soil, and they need to be replaced somehow.
Ideally, a field would be left fallow or planted with a cover crop. That's not economically feasible on a large commercial scale, so using biosludge is one way to replace the nutrients, it's basically using human waste that has been filtered.
But the filters cannot filter out drugs, so you may be getting a small dose of antibiotics, cancer meds, and so forth with your organic food.

I worked in agriculture for a number of years.

Just so you know if something is usda certified organic it doesn’t not have roundup in it. And was not grown in soil (for at least 10 years). Monsanto is evil.

Yup, there are a bunch of “organic” products on the list of tainted foods.

Goldenrod, thank you for that eye-opening article. While there's no doubt that a combination of chemicals used by Monsanto over the years are deadly, the case for the cereals is really hard to prove. You're only getting one pesticide component, and it seems that you'd have to ingest hundreds of pounds to be affected.
