Pallet Exanders and braces before 10

What's your thought?
Took my 9 year old just for a consulation at the orthodontist. He did show me how and why he needs one. We don't have orthontist insurance so pay out of pocket.
I just remember back in the day we didn't see the orthodontist till we lost all our baby teeth then got braces. Now kids are getting them younger and younger each year.

They say it’s because the results will be better if you start earlier. My DS got his palatal expander at 7 and it made a huge difference. His teeth are coming in a lot straighter - and there is room for all of them! So happy we did it early on.

We did it at 8 and I kick myself that we didn’t do it earlier. When we put it in there was already an issue with teeth coming in very crooked from lack of space. I agree with all of the above. My insurance also doesn’t cover it. I believe we paid $1850 out of pocket.

Ours cost the same - but insurance paid $1k.

My son had one front tooth that had come in and it is now straighter and the other one was able to come in. I see “before” pictures and can really notice the difference.

And other than the installation and molds - it didn’t bother him.

My son is 8 and his mouth is crowded and causing new teeth to come in crooked. He HATES stuff like that (won't even let us put a band-aid on him) so he's refusing the work, but his teeth are going to be majorly jacked up.

My stepson got this around age 10 or 11. It was great for when he got braces. He got his braces put on as a freshman because his baby teeth took forever to fall out, the ended up having to extract the last two to prepare for his braces.

The palette expander is an amazing appliance with great results. It needs to be done early to widen the jaw and allow more space for the new teeth to come in straight. By 13 or so the top bone in the roof of the mouth has already hardened and can not be expanded.

Re: Pallet Exanders and braces before 10

My son is 7 and started them, top and bottom, a few weeks ago. I saw the panoramic x-ray the dentist took of all the crowding and some teeth are coming in behind others. He's been a real champ about wearing them. I thought that would be the worst battle. After the cost, that is.

So many kids I know have braces in like 3rd, 4th and 5th grade. They haven't even lost all of their baby teeth yet. I dunno, I feel like they push things earlier and earlier now. I was also told they will have to wear a retainer MUCH longer after the braces are off since their teeth will still shift through adolescence

My son is 11 and just got a pallet expander and has braces. My son has an underbite. They said if I did not correct it now, he would possibly need jaw surgery as he got older.

But supposedly by starting early - teeth will stay straighter into adulthood. Because as the adult teeth come in - they come in straighter.

And fewer teeth need to be pulled to make room for others.

I had to wear retainers for awhile and started braces in 4th grade...

This. I really don't know. I had braces for two years when I was 13. My younger cousin got them at age 10 (for the reasons everyone is stating) but still had them until he was 14. Seems like they get them younger and keep them on longer.

I paid the same amount no matter how long my kid had braces though Chat Icon It was a set amount. The retainer is also a one time purchase so using it longer doesn't cost more. The only thing additional is the pallet expander but I wish that had been around when I had braces put on! My teeth would absolutely be straighter if it had!

Re: Pallet Exanders and braces before 10

I would get a second opinion. I was told that my 9 year old needed a palate expander. I got a second option because I was told that the expander is painful. She has now had bite plates which did not hurt at all. And it is doing the exact same thing the expander would do.

I had this in 3rd/4th/5th grade with the expanders and braces around 6th.

I have beautiful teeth now but I would not recommend it. This is why:

1 - as a kid it was torturous. it hurt, I still remember my mom cranking that thing with "the key" and crying

but more importantly

2 - I am 34 and I feel like I am dying of facial pain because of my TMJ. I went to doctors and specialists and there is no cure for TMJ and they told me the reason I have all this teeth pain is because of the dental work so young. It messes up your jaw! The orthodontists don't warn you of this. They just want to sell you on nice beautiful teeth and make money - ignoring that in the long term it might be so bad for your health! we thought we were doing the best thing for me at the time but now I suffer every day in pain because of all the dental work that ruined my jaw

3 - if they dont wear their retainers afterwards, the teeth will shift regardless. so then a lot of the work was for nothing.
