Does making an appointment for the DMV actually cut down your wait time?
I've never made an appt. for the dmv before. Is it worth it? Will they actually take me right away? Only asking bc the earliest appt I could get is 2 weeks away but that's cutting it close to when my license expires, so I'd prefer to go this week but will wait if it means I'll actually be in and out quickly.
ETA if you go without having an appointment, does anyone know if there is a "better" time of the day to go? Would going as soon as they open be good. Or does everyone do that? :
Going to the Hauppauge dmv, if that makes a difference.

Appointment definitely makes a difference. I’ve always scheduled first thing in the morning and you basically cut the line of people waiting.

Re: Does making an appointment for the DMV actually cut down your wait time?
I renewed my license at the Hauppauge DMV last month. I didn't have an appointment. Most of us waited on line for 3+ hours... The line for those with appointments was 15-30 minutes. Sometimes less. I was there about half an hour after they opened on a Friday, and there was already a long line. When I was done, the line was still at roughly 3+ hours.
And for some bizarre reason, for the license renewal line, you had to stand in an actual line. You couldn't get a number and sit down until you were called.
After the 3 hour wait for the first part, I had to wait almost another hour to do the eye test, and pay for the license. At least for that, I could take a number and sit.

3 hours!
So I guess I'll keep my appt. Sounds like I will still be there for a while unless having an appointment also let's you skip to the front of the vision test line and the the payment part. Not looking forward to it!

I made an appointment in Manhattan for renewal and to upgrade to an EDL. There was a little bit of waiting between vision test, photo, payment, but not More than a few minutes, and I was out in 45 minutes. It would have been quicker but they were having computer problems.

You can renew online and go to a certified place to do the eye exam. They send the results to the dmv and they send u a license. They have a list of places you can go online. My local king kullen pharmacy was on the list. Went there... paid $10 and did my eye exam. So easy

Not if you're going from an old-school license to one of the new Enhanced licenses. That has to be in-person. In 2020, you'll need one of the new licenses to go on any domestic flight, as well as other things, so I figured I'd might as well get it now.

Exactly. For a standard license you can renew online or by mail, but for the new enhanced version you need to go in person. My passport is expired and since I dont have a plan to travel internationally in the next several years but will likely travel domestically, I figured it's cheaper and easier to just get the enhanced id.

It took me about 2 hours with an appointment - but I was able to go on a special line to get my number so I do feel it was quicker (the V I went to was a hot mess though).
I received my new license in about 10 days though. And they give you the paper one that day.

I went to the one on 34th Street in Manhattan but I was in and out in 15 minutes with an eye test. People who did not have an appointment said they had been waiting for hours and were (obviously) still waiting when I left. It was amazing! The most pleasant DMV experience ever.

YES!!! Every time I make an appointment I have almost no wait. Once I waited for like 3 minutes. It's great
