Re: NYS college free tuition
I'm pretty certain both parents income is taken into account, like it is when filling out the Federal Financial aid forms

Not sure about the NYS program, but for the Federal financial aid forms, the household income of the custodial parent is what is taken into account (for example, my income counted for my stepson because he lived with us. His mother's income did not count)

The fafsa and the excelsior scholarship only need the income of the custodial parent. There is a section where you add in if you pay or receive child support.

Ohh interesting, because when I was growing up, I remember my mom saying they needed both (my parents were divorced) since college support was a joint expense, not just on her. This was a really long time ago though!

Really? So my SO and I count for my DS (we will be married by then) and his father does not? But my SO doesn't count for his own son and since his mother is single it's based on just hers?
We were told that my income doesn't count towards child support or anything for my SO's son (his mother took us to court to get more money when we moved in because I make substantially more than any of them)

Re: NYS college free tuition
I guess an accountant would know. But maybe if my situation continues i can only use my income. He may start to get disability and pension and or early social security by the time she is in college (3 years).
- ex doesnt claim kids because he isnt working and i get no CS - i am HOH - the federal adjusted gross income for household is what qualifies student
I am curious about this now because i am wondering about salary increases by that time. It seems tuition only youre not saving that much- maybe 20k over 4 years.

Re: NYS college free tuition
It is based on custodial parent and who claims the child as a dependent. When I went through my divorce, we looked into it because there are 3 children involved and it was decided that I will claim them because I make less than $110,000 and my exH makes significantly more than that. Child support does not have to be reported on those forms as "income" because it ends at a certain point.
