Adaptive technology

My son is in 6th grade, first year in middle school.

He had an adaptive technology evaluation in elementary, middle of the year of 4th grade. He was approved for a device (an iPad with a Bluetooth keyboard) and it was given to him in May of 4th grade.

We used it all last year with great success.

This year there is a lot of push back from his ELA teacher, and to be honest, that is where he needs it the most. She doesn't seem to want to really work with it. Last year they printed his work off it, this year she wants me to - and we don't have a printer at homeChat Icon my DS says she doesn't like the device at all and asks him to write. His IEP is written for him to use the device for everything, even testing.

I have open school night on Thursday, and I am planning to talk to her, but has anyone ever had push back with this type of device if their DC uses one?

Adaptive technology

When a teacher will not comply with an accommodation, you need to go to the department head or the principal. It's against the law to disallow or even discourage an approved accommodation.

I’m a speech therapist and I often get push back from teachers about using a child’s assistive technology. But if it is IEP mandated than there is no choice. Does it mention on the iep who is responsible for printing the work? I’m sorry you are having push back. But everyone needs to comply with the IEP

She can dislike it all she wants, but he is entitled to use it. She is in violation of his IEP if she disallows him to. As for the printer, if she is requiring the work be printed, the school needs to provide you with a printer. My son had a computer given by the school that he did all work on. It was then emailed to the teacher. There was zero pushback that I was aware of from him or his aide. BUT, as he got older, heavy note taking became more prevalent, and he couldn't type that fast. So, his aide was basically his scribe, and took all of his notes.

They absolutely have to comply with the iep. If you've already tried to work it out with her I would go to his special ed teacher or the head of that department for help. I would not confront her at open school night about it. It's not the right forum to address that kind of issue.

I don't confront anyone, it's not my style Chat Icon

I have emailed about it with her, but I am going to see how she is face to face at open school night. Tone can get lost in emails. He's in ICT so I'd like to speak with both teachers

Sorry, I definitely didn't mean to imply that you would actually be confrontational toward her. I just meant I wouldn't try to discuss individual issues at open school night. I would probably just call bc like you said it can be tricky to get a read on people through email. Just make sure you keep your own record of dates and what is discussed in case you continue to have an issue with compliance.
