What is family training?

Reading through posts to try to find some clue as to how to help my daughter, our family. What we are doing isn’t working and my eight year old is becoming more aggressive and defiant when reminded of rules inside and outside of our home. Our relationships are deteriorating and I need help to change things. Was seeking at home visits so what we are doing could be assessed and get help from there. I don’t know if should start with a neurologist, a psychologist or what at this point. Seems the more I try to find information the more confusing it becomes

Re: What is family training?

We get family training through the school district. My son's SEIT comes to us once a week and she and I discuss my son's behavior issues and how to resolve them. It has helped. The only thing id that both parents need to be committed to following through with the advice given.

A family member's son has Obstinate Defiance Disorder and they went to private family training to learn how to talk as a family in order to prevent episodes. If your child doesn't have an IEP through the district, then I would speak to your ped about private family training. However, if your daughter's behavior is affecting her socially at school, you can get her evaluated through the district and possibly get services covered through them.

How is your daughter acting out? Is this recent behavior? Has her teacher, other family members, etc. expressed concern? Has there been any trauma or disturbance to her, the family, routine?

I would look into the SSP (Safe and Sound protocol).

The SSP is a music based therapy (5 days/ 1 hr a day) that can have significant results in:

Social and emotional difficulties
Auditory sensitivities
Anxiety and trauma related challenges
Inattention
Stressors that impact social engagement

You will notice less meltdowns, more cooperation, etc. The therapy stimulates the vagus nerve, which is supposed to help with anxiety, memory, etc.

Re: What is family training?

A psychologist can help with what you are describing. (disclosure - I'm a psychologist). Parent training can often be a significant portion of working with a child/family. Parent training involves helping parents change the way they react to their child, helping them understand the behaviors and possible causes, and helping parents set up systems that will encourage the desired behaviors. A psychologist can also help identify other potential issues at play (i.e. many times anxiety can result in disruptive and defiant behavior.)

Would I start with finding a child psychologist then?

We get parent training through district. She gives me advice and ways to approach my DS' behaviors in certain situations.

I have the same issue and asked my ped ...
No answer, they tell me to talk to my school district that offers a class once a month on a night I can't get childcare.Chat Icon
