Why are schools sending home advertisements for businesses? That seems so strange.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Am I going to have to put a “no soliciting” sign on DD’s folder when she gets to kindergarten?

It's for things like Boy/Girl Scouts registration, Little League teams, educational classes at the local library, events held by the fire department, PTA events, Booster club info, community food drives, etc, etc, etc.

Even though it can get very annoying and I tend to throw most of this stuff out, I do understand why the school is willing to distribute these things.

I actually found it helpful when DS first started school, because I didn't always know what was available in terms of sports/activities, and some of the websites for these activities are notoriously bad. So the flyers were helpful.

If it's something I'm not interested in, I throw it in the trash. DS is in 4th grade now and his folder is always packed with papers. I take 5 mins to go through it every day and sort out what I need to keep and what to toss. No biggie. I'd rather have more communication than less, if I had to choose.

Going back to the original discussion, I don't think it's weird that the teacher wouldn't know about or recall every notice that was sent home in a folder. I initially thought it was more odd that OP didn't read a notice she saw, and then wanted the teacher to explain it to her. That seems ridiculous.

But given the OP said she DID read it and asked a question about it, it's harder to judge the situation. I think if it was a "welcome back letter" from the school, and provides information about school procedures and policies, then the teacher should have some idea about it. Giving her the benefit of the doubt, she could have at least said "I didn't have a chance to look at it yesterday, let me get back to you on that." If it was some random notice about a local soccer team or something, then obviously I wouldn't expect her to know.

The email, I do think the teacher should have more information on that. If I'm sending out an email as a teacher, I would ask for clarification from the office or whoever asked me to send it given that any questions that come up are likely to be directed back to me. How many forms can there be? Medical forms, emergency contact forms? I think it's not unreasonable for the teacher to know this, and if she doesn't, to offer a more helpful/professional response.

At my school, the PTA sends alot of stuff home for parents regarding events and informational meetings outside of school hours that have nothing to do with the staff. I don't read it!

I'll address the reading the letter first....I actually did read the letter, I changed the details on WHY I asked her about it a bit to remove identifying info (in case the teacher is on here/murphys law).
But the conversation was the same, I asked about the letter and was told that they had no knowledge of what the letter was about. (it was a general "Welcome to the school" letter) a simple "Oh, that was nothing, just a welcome letter, nothing important" would have been more than enough

I'm surprised that most of you agree on B.

I'm not a teacher, but I would like to think I would run my class this way:
Get there in the morning - prep the days lessons, meet with my assistant and discuss what is happening today/any notices going out/anything we should be aware of - basically make sure we're both on the same page.
After classes are done for the day (still only 2:45 pm) - discuss with my assistant how the day went and what we have on deck for tomorrow do any prep work.

To be honest this changes the whole story. What did you ask specifically? Did you not understand the letter?

I am also with option b. I don't think this is a big deal. As they get older there is so much other stuff the teachers need to be paying attention to and one of them is not the general crap that gets stuffed in their take home folders.

I say B

In our school almost everything is uploaded to the website and the teachers post reminders on the class pages about what is due.

DD is in PK. We are required to empty their folders before returning to school the next day, so I am forced to read whats inside.

I also do not like clutter or papers hanging around, so whatever is not important gets thrown out, anything that needs checks or needs to be filled out goes into my bag so I can complete at work the next day and all art work gets a picture taken of it so I can make a shutterfly album of it all at the end of the year and then it gets tossed right then and there.

so I AM a teacher, and it's hilarious how people think this is how the morning goes lmao

This is how MY morning goes. I intend on doing all of what you described, but instead of getting done on my prep period what I wanted to get done, I usually have to spend it doing the following:

1. Calling parents back who contacted me about the previous nights' homework or test coming up

2. scheduling IEP meetings for one of the 16 IEPs i have to handle this year

3. Getting told i have a coverage on my prep for a teacher who called out sick

Not to mention, notices are not given to us first thing in the morning- not in my current school or ANY school I've worked in. Someone runs to the room in the last like 10-15 mins of the day and says "hand these out to the kids." And believe me- when I am in the middle of going over what their homework is or finishing up an example state test problem that they need to know how to do, I am not stopping classes to tell my students to bring this flyer home about a pizza fundraiser to raise funds for their field trip.

AND at 2:45pm, i'm not discussing how my day went with the assistant, because both me and my assistant are running out the door to pick up our children from school. Do you stay after work hours to discuss how your day went? I think not.

Im not the original poster but I do stay after work (which ends for me between 6 and 7 pm) to discuss how the day went with my boss and what's on the horizon. But that's neither here nor there Chat Icon

I would NOT expect elementary school teachers to know about notices going home because of exactly the reasons stated by mommy2be however with our pre-k teachers with only 8 kids in the class and a smaller school and fewer notices generally sent home, yes I think I would expect it--at the very least in general I would expect the teacher to have a little more interaction than simply "I dont know" especially if you had a specific question about it. Either way I wouldnt get hung up on it unless it a recurring situation and you in general feel like the teacher is checked out.

To those posters that slammed the OP for not reading the note.. As a working mom that gets home at 7/8pm every night and has to deal with dinner, check or do homework with 2 young kids and prep lunches and snacks for the next day, bathe them and get them ready for bed often times by myself---- ya sometimes I dont have that 10 seconds to read the notices either =) However I wouldnt ask the teacher, I would put it in a pile to read the next day.

As the parent it’s even more so your responsibility to have read the letter. The teacher has a ton of paperwork to stay on top of and sends home (and receives) a ton of papers to each kid every day... why would you even bother her with asking about it?

This. Sometimes it gets overwhelming. I get home late, then there is homework, dinner, shower, etc
I do try to keep up but sometimes something will slip.
However I wouldn't expect the teacher to know what every single hand out was either.
I'd probably just go look later that day when I got home.

I don't think people slammed her for not reading it but pointed out that she shouldn't have bothered the teacher about it. I am a working mom and I have a pile of notices that I go through mid week because I am busy and can't read them every night. However, I would never ask the teacher about a notice that I didn't read.

It also turns out that she did read the notice and was asking a question about it.

Yes nobody was slamming. But if you have 2 mins to ask the teacher what it said, use that 2 mins to actually read it yourself.

I work but it’s pretty easy to tell which notices get tossed immediately. Ones that I have to take note of I hang on the fridge and look at them later. Anything that needs filling out I take to work and fill out while eating lunch. Or on a boring conference call Chat Icon

I already responded to this saying I too keep notices I cant get to that night in a pile to read later in the week. However my point is that by the repeated posts which say-- just take the two minutes to read it rather than ask the teacher-- you are in a way slamming the OP. Sometmes you don't have the time to read it the day you get it and there is no harm is asking the teacher the teacher the next day what was in the note sent home in case it was something time sensitive etc. I happen to see my kid's prek teacher every morning when I drop off my daughter so it would be no big deal to ask then. That being said if she wasn't aware of the note that would also be ok by me.

Absolutely B.

To be honest, preschool teachers are typically paid very pitifully. I have worked in preschool. So maybe she doesn't have the time or motivation to go above and beyond to read it. I don't think it matters and I wouldn't think twice.

I've been teaching 15 years and I still can never anticipate how my day will go despite how organized I am. We are talking about kids. A snowflake will throw everything off. A kid farts and it takes time to settle them down. Phone calls, visitors, water spills, box of markers falls, someone drops snack, etc. Teaching is never predictable!

I am glad that the OP's original story wasn't true. I would be embarrassed to ask the teacher to catch me up when I slacked in ways that are accessible to me.

The teachers don't work for the parents. They are professionals--deserving of respect--who are there to 1) educate the kids; and 2) vet/grade the kids to see if they are deserving of promotion.

I always hope that my children and family will make a good impression on teachers, and we are gratefu for the work they do with our kids. They are not our personal assistants.
