Has anyone qualified for the N.Y.-Sun program?
A rep from “NY State Solar” (not affiliated with the gov) came to our house while my parents were painting. They said we may qualify for the N.Y. Sun government program. We don’t have any tall trees or homes around the yard, so the roof does get a lot of sunlight. The gist of it was that they install panels for free, you get a reduction on your electric bill (I think as a tax rebate) & then in X years when you own them, you just pay for the meter. I think the idea is that they need to do research but not enough people have been buying panels because they can’t afford them outright or don’t want to lease them for 20+ years.
My parents have panels so they know how the process of buying panels work - and it seems like the program is legitimate, I’m just wondering if anyone else has experience with it.
The rep is coming tomorrow just to give us information.

We had someone going around my parents house yesterday telling us that the government will pay for the panels. My mom said no thanks & closed the door. We've heard more negative things about the panels than good.

My parents haven’t had any issues with their panels, but they did a TON of research before they narrowed down who they would use and how they would pay for it. I don’t see the negative if they truly aren’t costing me anything, but we’ll see what the rep says. We might not even qualify since we’re only 2 people & probably wont use much electricity.

I think it can be a good thing, but just be careful because I think some of the sales people either don't know what they are talking about or are genuinely dishonest about how it works and how much money you can save. Not all, but I know some homeowners who were under the impression that they would received these great tax refunds EVERY year for it because that was how the salesperson presented it, but it was not the case.

My dad was saying that it makes it difficult to sell the house...that the buyer needs to accept taking over responsibility for them. I'm not sure if you would be responsible if any damage was done to them due to weather...or if you need to fix the roof for some reason, it could get costly...but that was another thing I heard. I'm sure you'll do a lot of research like your parents, which is smart!

The new owner only has to take over payments if you lease panels. If you own the panels, you're still responsible for the loan you took if you move - so obv doesn't make sense to get them if you plan to move, but its free power basically for whoever buys - though it increases your home value so new homeowners still kinda pay for it.

I have solar panels, I own, not lease. We have a 12 year loan on the purchase price. All in between my connection charge and my monthly loan payment, I pay less than I was paying PSEG a month. If we were to sell the house, we would use proceeds from the sale to pay off the remaining balance on the loan. Our loan and connection charge is about $100 less per month than what our monthly PSEG bill was, so we saved money from day 1. We too did a lot of research and we received significant rebates to offset the cost of the panels. In general, if the loan payment and the connection charge is less than you are currently paying to PSEG, it is worth it. Remember energy costs will continue to rise. Loan payments are not forever and when they end, you will only pay a connection charge. There are many reputable companies who deal with solar panels and unfortunately just as many unreputable companies that distribute misinformation. Personally I would never lease, I would only purchase.
