Nails Falling Off After Coxsackie??
Hi-
Hope someone can help me here. DS had a BAD case of coxsackie about a month ago. His feet are still peeling, and his hands were in bad shape too until a couple of weeks ago. His cuticles were covered in blisters. So for the past few days, he says his fingernail hurts. When I looked at it, it looks like it's turning completely white and like it's coming loose. I'm afraid it's going to fall off...he will flip the EFF out!
Has anyone ever heard of this? I called the dr., and they wouldn't even answer my questions, they said to just bring him in if I'm concerned (I honestly don't want to pull him out of school early for this...he's missed enough due to the coxsackie).
Has this ever happened to anyone's LO?

Re: Nails Falling Off After Coxsackie??
Apparently there is a more virulent version that can cause this.
Read this
The A6 version is odd, for a number of reasons. It causes more severe rashes up the legs, around the mouth and, especially for toddlers, on the buttocks. Arca reports that in some cases, after the rash has gone away, the skin can peel and the fingernails and toenails can fall off. “It’s scary, but they’ll grow back,” she says.

Nails Falling Off After Coxsackie??
Yes happened to us. It’s something like a 4-5% chance of it happening, the disease that keeps on giving. ![Chat Icon](c/4.gif)
A new nail is growing underneath. Eventually the top nail will lift up from the base. You can file, cut them or wear bandaids. Ours weren’t bad with lifting until the end so after a bath I trimmed with cuticle cutters and filed the nail. At this point about 80% of the nail was lifting or grown out.

Nails Falling Off After Coxsackie??
It happened to my niece and also to my DD. My DD's feet peeled for so long after coxsackie and then her toenails fell off.

My son's toenails fell off after Coxsackie. It was so gross. It took awhile, but new toenails grew in.

Re: Nails Falling Off After Coxsackie??
Thank you so much, I feel better!
This is the first time dealing with coxsackie in our house...what a terrible virus! I never heard of nails falling off because of it though. I had a weird premonition about a month back when DS's cuticles were completely covered in blisters, I remember having a fear he would lose his nails.
Thanks all!

Yeah, happened to us too a couple years ago. Worst virus ever! Caught it 2x in about 4 months. Even the adults in our family caught it, even though our doctor said it's very rare for adults to catch it. Some of DS's toenails fell off a few weeks after the second time he got it. Apparently if the strains are different, you can catch it again and again. Praying we never ever get it again

Nails Falling Off After Coxsackie??
Both my girls had it last summer and their finger and toe nails fell off about 3 weeks after they got sick.
Apparently the virus causes the nails to stop growing for a short time so then when the nail grows out there is a timeframe when no nail was growing. The nails grew back soon after. It was very scary at first until I knew it was a symptom.

Nails Falling Off After Coxsackie??
Yes. Some of my sons toenails fell off after coxsackie. But it did not seem to bother him. It looked like the new nail was already growing in under the old one when it fell off.
