Amazon Pulls Out of Planned New York City Headquarters
Thoughts?
Despite controversy over the tax breaks, I think it is terrible to lose 25K jobs for NYC at an average salary of $150K and all the tax revenue. Sends a message that NYC is not big business friendly. Our young people already cant afford to stay here, this would have been a great opportunity. It’s astonishing how economically illiterate the people who chased them off are.

Re: Amazon Pulls Out of Planned New York City Headquarters
I'm torn. Yes, it would be great to bring more jobs.
But do I think a company as rich as Amazon NEEDS $3 billion in tax breaks? No. I feel like that money could better serve the city and state in so many other ways. Our infrastructure is a disaster, and them coming here would only stress it more. And I am not sure it would help our young people be able to afford to stay here either. If anything, it might raise the cost of living in NYC.
There are plenty of jobs in NY that offer $150K salaries, but not everyone is qualified for them. What kind of jobs were they offering at that salary? I would imagine that kind of salary was for management level positions. So the average person, or the recent college grad, wouldn't be walking into Amazon and commanding that kind of salary if I had to guess. I don't think they would be offering salaries that are 2-3 times the average company, unless I'm wrong.

I felt the same- I understand concerns... to a point, but I feel like it would have done more good than harm. I'm sure anyone in the area who is unemployed and part time and struggling to stay afloat would've gladly welcomed the jobs.

Real estate prices in the area went sky high...so it definitely raised the cost of living. They were not tapping into the underserved talent either...guaranteeing that only a small percentage of jobs would be set aside for people in the local community...I think it was supposed to be 3k jobs in that pool but Channel 11 said it was a much smaller number.
The deal was a bit secretive and once details started coming out that they were getting so much incentives it bred distrust. I truly am surprised it fell apart though.

I think people are going gaga over the "idea" of Amazon but have no clue what it would mean in terms of an already crumbling infrastructure, environmental impact, sprawling gentrification and the fact that these jobs would not truly exist for the people already living here. Perhaps years down the road the job market would adapt but initially? No, they would be hiring outside of NY and bringing people IN.
Ultimately, I am glad they pulled out. The tax breaks alone were unconscionable to the state and quite honestly Amazon and Bezos should be ashamed of themselves for even attempting to burden NY like this. If they want to bring their business here then they have to do it on the up and up and pay their share.
But I think in a few years we will realize that we dodged a huge bullet. I think if people think LI living is bad now, it would have been unfathomably worse.

Mixed feelings.
I honestly think that the infrastructure cannot support an outfit of that size. Traffic congestion if people drove, the subways are already overcrowded during rush hour. LIRR is also crowded, although I don't know about the trains that stop at Hunterspoint as my line doesn't go there.
All those tax incentives when the city can really use that money - fund the MTA so that the customers don't have to keep paying increased fares for increasingly terrible service - for all branches. Figure out a way to fix public housing, get the homeless and mentally ill off the streets. Fix the damn streets with all the freaking pot holes. Fund more education programs -> that is our future.

Oh God help us if that's true. You might as well move off of Long Island now because it will take you 2 hours to drive 5 miles if that happens. Long Island has enough traffic. There's no room for anything more, sadly.
ETA- I actually heard in a statement from Amazon though that they are moving the jobs that would have been in LIC to Nashville and VA

This isn't going to happen. LIC left a bad taste in their mouth. They aren't going to reconsider Newark anymore, which, sucks because they wanted it but lost out to LIC. They even did some work to get the bid.

And this too. I mean NYC is already going to be charged for congestion pricing. So lets bring more congestion ?? Its only a matter of time before the other boroughs get hit with it. And the way LIC is building up. They will be next.

Newark would benefit greatly if they went there. They need this. Its a shame Amazon isnt considering it.

I agree. My DH thinks it was dumb, LIC has already started to be gentrified and I think those people didn't want Amazon in the area. They lost out on alot of jobs. For what something else is to pop up there anyway - another warehouse lol?
I posted this already, but Newark wanted them to go there.

Yea I know, because you will get people employed from NYC, NJ and probably PA. Since its a transit hub.

Amazon Pulls Out of Planned New York City Headquarters
The crumbling infrastructure is the fault of NYC, NYS and the corrupt MTA, not Amazon....it surely wont be upgraded now. Low income people will be priced out of LIC eventually , its proximity to NYC makes it ideal for gentrification. The tax breaks were a bit suspect but it was not money being paid to amazon it was the difference of amazon paying less back. Now NYC/ NYS is left with 0% of $0. The city and state tax revenue on 25K jobs alone would have been beneficial

I think it is a disgrace. They lost out on thousands of jobs. Not just those from Amazon but all those jobs from the surrounding businesses that would have benefited. Most NYers were approved of the deal and for a few politicians to derail that is very discouraging.

Amazon Pulls Out of Planned New York City Headquarters
Politicians like AOC should be ashamed of themselves. She is a complete moron. She actually tweeted a similar fact that Amazon pays no taxes.
Has it ever occurred to her that the state income taxes from the jobs this company will bring in will make up for the corporate tax breaks? These aren't minimum wage jobs that HER constituents qualify for. These were higher paying jobs, many in the tech industry to help Amazon support their AWS infrastructure.
The bottom line is you HAVE to offer these larger companies tax breaks, or they simply won't come. What New York won't offer, other states like Virginia and North Carolina will. Amazon basically gave the middle finger to New York, AOC, and every other dumb politician who opposed this.
AOC you got your wish, you don't have to give Amazon the billion in tax breaks. Now tell us where do you plan on generating this additional tax revenue? Oh I forgot, from a 70% income tax rate and a 2% "wealth tax". Idiot.
Even useless Cuomo was on damage control throwing politicians like her under the bus.

I'm generally upset about the decision, but also mixed.
I'm upset that Amazon decided against coming here because I think it never hurts to have more jobs in NYC, but I was also opposed to all of the tax breaks. They already supposedly are paying no federal income tax, which is astonishing.

100% agree. A useless bunch of morons running their big mouths killed a deal that would have helped more than it harmed.
Nice way to set a precedent. Do we really think we're going to have major corporations clamoring to supply jobs on that scale again? I don't think so. And for the people who don't think that Amazon deserves a $3bil tax break..how exactly do you think states & cities entice corporations to set up shop? Nothing in life is free. Now Amazon will take their business elsewhere benefitting another city and their residents.
Those jobs would have brought revenue to the city through income taxes. Those jobs would have contributed to revenue and income in the surrounding areas by keeping the restaurants, stores, etc in business. What a damn shame.

She is something else. Agree with all of what you said. Those salaries would have added a nice amount into the economy via payroll taxes and spending in general. The fact that she and her cohorts had the power to end a large business from coming into NYC is very scary. These high salaries are what helps keep NYC afloat. The tax breaks are just that, breaks. This is not $3bn just laying around to be used. I don’t blame amazon one bit for bowing out.
