I think it is unrealistic to expect for a doctor's office to have a Saturday or evening appointment within 2-3 weeks of your calling (assuming you posted the same day that you had the issue).
Agreed. I book my son's yearly for the next year when I am there. Because I need a weekend or a night appointment.

I actually would have booked the appointment a year out but the office doesn't have the MDs schedules that far out, and no I didn't expect an appointment in the next few weeks I was fine with waiting. I was not fine when the office told me they only do sick visits on Saturdays- I don't think that is OK- the office manager was able to help me.

I think booking a year in advance is nuts. I have no problem getting an apt a month or two in advance...

Listen, I know its hard to be a working mom but check-ups are part of our parental duties that were probably in the fine print when we signed up for the job... Its frustrating that we need to accommodate the world rather than the world accommodate us.
I find it frustrating that a service business that caters to school aged children is not open hours that are convenient for their target audience. I would never pull my child out of school and take a PTO day for a well visit. If I were a pediatrician my hours would be 7am-12pm, take a siesta, and reopen from 4pm-8pM.

My boy's pediatrician isn't open on Saturday's (they have another doc they say you can go to) and they are open Sundays, but only for sick visits.
They are open late for a few nights and sometimes those are hard to get.
I get it. They have lives too, but I think for the most part they are accommodating. My son's orthodontist only does the big procedures during the week in the mornings so when he had his pallet expander put in I just brought him into school a half hour late with a note so it was an excused tardy. Not a big deal and he didn't miss much.
They are good for sick visits late so I'm happy about that.
If they have to leave a half hour early or come in a little late with a note it's fine.
Plus, it's not all school aged kids they deal with. They go to the hospitals to see newborns and toddler checkups when they are there monthly. School aged kids go in less time! Once a year for check up, once for the flu shot (which they do late hours for) and if they're sick.

That's the thing. THey also cater to newborns who have monthly checkups and toddlers. THe school aged kids are once a year for a checkup and sick visits. Why should they cater to that. They cater to everyone. I try and do an early checkup or late one. I'm also lucky they are summer bdays so they go in after school.
They don't do so many late checkups since they are open for sick kids and see the nurse practitioner. I'd rather they be open more for sick bc that's when I need them and have always been accommodating with same day to get us in when they're sick

ITA. The only time I was able to bring my DD for a checkup during the day was when I was on maternity leave. So, her first 2 checkups.
Every single one of my friends with kids wouldn’t touch a doctor who didn’t have evening and weekend hours. As the old timers retire this is going to be less and less of an issue. The new generation of doctors choose pediatrics knowing the hours.

I have to book my kids well visits at least 6 months in advance if I want an appointment after 4 or on a Saturday. I do that every year, but this year OF COURSE a week before the appointment something came up and my son couldn't make it. I obviously couldn't wait months because he needed his physical so I just booked up during the day at a time when I knew he had his lunch period/gym/study hall time. I signed him out and then signed him back in to school in under 90 minutes. It wasn't a big deal and honestly it's only once per year. For sick visits, my pediatrician will do hours before 8am or until 6pm and you can just walk in. I'd rather they do that.

Pretty sure newborns and sick kids are available at the hours of 7am-2pm also :)
They don’t currently cater to everyone. I can’t get a sick visit the day my kid gets sick EVER. I end up going to a different PED because of it and have the same problem at the current one. I go to a walk in place for the kids if they are sick.

Oh. Well that’s different. Our pediatrician we can always get a sick visit and fairly quickly. Only time we can’t is when they’re closed Saturdays. That stinks.
Our ped has a few late nights except Friday and a few nights till 5 or 6 with the nurse practitioner

My sons dentist hours are built around school. The stent open til later during the week and have tons of Saturday hrs.

I think lots of people have trouble with sick visits. These urgent care centers aren’t opening left and right without data to show they’ll make money.
I’ve said it before, the private practice physician is going the way of the dinosaur. Northwell, the NYU/Winthrop merger, I think Good Sam is trying to expand. They are all recruiting large pediatric groups and they will be staffed at all hours. It’s the only way to make money. Private practice can’t compete.
