When to go to the doctor?

I feel like i may jump to go to the doctor too soon on certain things. Monday afternoon i started to feel my throat hurt, by Tuesday my glands were swollen... all day yesterday and today they got worse to the point that today I can barely swollow and my ears and teeth hurt. I know this is caused by post nasal drip/cold. Would you go to the doctor to see if they could give you anything else to help bring down the swelling? I am so uncomfortable. But i dont want to go to the doc for them to say "you have a cold go home"... i feel like an a s s.

Re: When to go to the doctor?

I might be the wrong person to answer because I have to be at death's door to go to the doctor- Chat Icon- but I wouldn't go for that.

I was just watching something about how people are going to the doctor for things that are viral and getting prescribed antibiotics that won't help a viral illness and it's causing super bugs to emerge.

I'd just up my IP-6 like I always do when I feel something coming on, rest, drink fluids and wait it out with advil etc.

If you feel it might be strep- and have a fever, etc- then I'd go

Me? Probably never.

For anyone else, I’d say if they have a fever or the sore throat isn’t helped by OTC pain relievers. Teeth hurting could be sinuses. Are you congested\headachy?

Re: When to go to the doctor?

I don't go to the doctor for something I think is a cold. I have to be really sick.

My sinuses have been bothering me because of allergies, and my cheekbone has been hurting because of the post nasal drip.
I "can" take a decongestant to help with the sinus pressure but won't because it will raise my blood pressure and I am medicated for that.
I won't got to the doctor because there is nothing they can do - no infection so no antibiotics.
So, it's Tylenol and plenty of fluids to thin the mucus.

If you look in the back of your throat with a flashlight can you see white spots?

2 weeks ago something very similar happened to me. I went to urgent care across the street - they said it wasn't strep and sent me out the door. About 3 days later the pain spread to the other side and could feel my lymph nodes were now enlarged. Went back to my real doctor who said that doctor was an idiot and I needed antibiotics. I would not say enlarged lymph nodes is a symptom partnered with a cold - that's a sign of fighting infection - so I would go in.

I’m the opposite of everyone’s answers and go at the first sign of something BUT i really know my body and know when it’s strep, flu, etc
Do you have a fever?
Did you take over the counter meds that have helped?
If it’s getting worse I say go, better to just get checked and meds if needed

Re: When to go to the doctor?

I usually give it a few days of adequate rest, OTC meds (mucinex, nasal spray, netti pot, antihistamine and Tylenol if needed) teas and soups. If within 4 days or so there is zero improvement, I’ll go to the Dr.

Re: When to go to the doctor?

Can it be seasonal allergies? I had that too this year and once i started taking Allegra, it cleared up.

I go for what you described, and did go to twice last week. First to city MD and was advised it was a virus. Was given prednisone. Then Friday was worse and had no voice. My dr. advised it’s a sinus infection caused by post nasal drip, caused by allergies. Take some Claritin!
