Last day of school question
Does anyone know the real reason why students have to attend the last day of school for only one hour? We were always told it was to get your report card and to find out your next year's teacher, but is that the real reason?
Now, we have electronic report cards and teacher assignments get mailed out on August 22nd.
Why do they still do this?

Last day of school question
To take attendance to meet the required days, and to give teachers time to hand everything in and finish paperwork —- my take, perhaps there’s another reason

Re: Last day of school question
NYS calculates attendance using hours now...schools are required to have 900 hours K-6 and 990 6-12.

Last day of school question
We go for 1/2 a day. I wouldn’t send my kid for an hour. Too difficult as a working mom.

We have a half day too. And even if not working I probably wouldn’t get everyone up and out to school for an hour. Seems completely silly. If it’s hours, just extend each half day by 20-30 mins.

Re: Last day of school question
our last day of school is always a half day- 3 hours. Even when I was in school a hundred years ago it was always half days. Never an hour

Last day of school question
We go for an hour and a half on the last day. We too used to get teacher assignments and report cards but they now tell us teachers in the summer and report cards are electronic as well. They just go, sign yearbooks mainly and then head out to the pool. Most parents take off since it’s a short day but I farmed my kids out to friends.

My son goes to 11:20 (7:30 they open the doors)
But they still get report cards (even though they are on PupilPath too)

Re: Last day of school question
We go in for an hour. It's SO annoying. We work FT so my parents are coming to put DS on the bus. They barely will have time to make a pot of coffee before the bus will drop him back off at home!

Last day of school question
My son is only in for an hour today too. He'll be home by 10:45 am and his report card is online only. We'll find out his teacher at the end of August.

Last day of school question
DD's last day was last Friday. Weds and Thurs were half days and Fri was until 10:30. I found it very inconsiderate. Thank God I work 5 minutes from my house/her school, but what if I worked in the city?

And I was just saying to DH this morning. If they need a certain number of hours/days etc for the state- then why not combine these last 2 half days into one FULL day and then they will get out a day early or whatever. What's the point of splitting the last 6 hours required by the state for the year into 3 hours and 3 hours? But then again, EVERYTHING is inconsiderate towards working parents when it comes to elementary school. They haven't evolved from the 1950s where women didn't work

I know the issues with actual events during the day, and the half days at the end of the year, but apart from that, what would they even change?

It's days, not hours. That's why they need to go to today. Today is the 180th day. So they can't combined half days into a whole day.
ETA: and the day counts at x amount of hours. Hence why sometimes they will do a half of a snow day if a lot of snow days have been used, they will still get credit for the day.

NYS calculates attendance using hours now. Next year we have to have a half hour added to each day because our district is actually short on hours with this new rule.

Re: Last day of school question
My kids had full days on Monday and Tuesday. Today they went in a half day. I like it this way. Many surrounding districts had half days all week. I understand my kids have not been doing much this last month but its better they are in school. I find that by August they are itching to get back see their friends and to get back into a routine.

It is actually both. They must be in for 180 days and have 900 hours of educational time. That is why some districts on the island are going to have issues with adding in extra recess. They are out of compliance.
The days are on the calendar from the September so I don't know why everyone is surprised about it at the end of every year.

Last day of school question
Previous posters said it correctly: anything more than X amount of hours counts as a school day, hence delayed openings instead of snow days and a bunch of half-days instead of combining them into 1.
Trying to learn if an hour was considered a "day"
