Anyone lower their cholesterol naturally?
My primary just called to tell me that I have high cholesterol. I'm not sure if it's because I have been keto for a while. In any event, I definitely do NOT want to go on meds. Has anyone successfully naturally lowered their cholesterol? If so, what do you eat and what do you avoid? I saw full fat dairy is a no no.

Re: Anyone lower their cholesterol naturally?
My mom had high cholesterol and triglycerides. She cut out cheese, red meat and added more vegetables and beans. She also started taking fish oil, but I think that was for the triglycerides.
It went down to normal levels.

Re: Anyone lower their cholesterol naturally?
Get the book Cholesterol Clarity and read it. It's very enlightening. Basically if you are doing keto your numbers will be higher than traditional doctors want. However, that number doesn't matter so much because if you are following it correctly, you have less inflammation in your body when you are eating that way. And without the presence of inflammation, cholesterol is not harmful as when you are eating a standard American diet. I found the book fascinating.

Interesting. I will have to read it and talk to my doctor about it. Thanks!

Soluble fiber. Oatmeal, apples w skin, beans, bran. Avoid fried food & saturated fats, instead eat healthy fats like olive oil, avocado, fish. Exercise!!!

My brother took red yeast rice, and it helped.

All of this.
I have high lipids (just found out this week triglycerides were 550 and total was 246- I did however binge for 3 weeks at BBQs so I knew it would be horrific). For years my cholesterol has been high actually. They go really high when I’m not following what I quoted. But when I’m consistent with my nutrition and get exercise at least 4x a week, my numbers are perfect.
That however is not realistic for me so I actually just went for the cardio CT scan to check for plaque/calcium. Depending on those results, I may start meds anyway.
But really.. healthy portions, everything in moderation, add oatmeal and fiber to your diet and no white carbs, usually brings the #s within range.

Anyone lower their cholesterol naturally?
My cholesterol has always been high. I was active and at a healthy weight so I figured it was genetic.
Three years ago I started eating oatmeal (literally my only diet change) and now my cholesterol is low in a healthy range. Same thing with my triglycerides.

Re: Anyone lower their cholesterol naturally?
I had no idea oatmeal could be so helpful! I don't know my actual numbers yet so I'm not sure just how elevated it is. But I also have high blood pressure now, likely because of my stressful lifestyle and excess belly chub, so I need to get things in check. (Hello 40, you devil you!)

after 40 we definitely have to pay attention to everything.
i agree with everyone who has suggested oatmeal. i swear by it... the fact that i love the stuff definitely helps.
inflammation is a huge factor in a lot of what ails the american public. i'm going to take a look into the book mentioned.
