holiday foods
what food(s) in your life EQUAL the holiday season? what food(s) must be consumed during this time of year for your heart to feel that you experienced the holidays?
is it something traditional from the country your family came from or is it something that has a funny family story?
it's 7:14am on the west coast. i've already finished all the reports i have to run, today. i need to find a way to keep my mind from going nuts as i watch the milliseconds tick away on the clock. help a sister out!

Re: holiday foods
I only eat stuffing once a year- on Thanksgiving- so yeah that's a big one for me.
I really only eat pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving too- but I can take or leave that.
A chestnut praline latte from Starbucks is what I call "Christmas in a cup" so I always like to treat myself to a few of those but they are loaded with sugar so I limit it.
I like any kind of Christmas cookie as well!

Re: holiday foods
A funny one-My DH is Italian and growing up his mom would make the traditional fish dinner on Christmas eve. Him and one of his sisters did not like fish at all back then, so she would get them pizza and calzones every year from this one specific place.
From the time we got married, he would have to have pizza and calzones on Christmas eve. (we don't have a big celebration that night so it's just us at home). And it would have to be from that same place. We don't go to that place at all during the year for pizza because it's a little out of the way- but on Christmas eve the pizza and calzone had to be from there.
And of course now he doesn't eat that stuff anymore, but we still go and get it for me and my DD and he lives vicariously through us!

Re: holiday foods
Turkey (for Thanksgiving), Ham, Pernil & Rice - if you don't have any of that on the table you might as well not invite anyone from my family.
Pumkin Pie and Cheesecake.
We do Pernil and Rice for Thanksgiving, Christmas and NYE.
and Alcohol - but that's just all parties.

Re: holiday foods
Stuffing and pumpkin pie, pumpkin muffins.
I also make a triple chocolate mousse cake and that is very labor intensive and screams holiday to me.

Re: holiday foods
Stuffing - I will eat stove top here and there but that’s not thanksgiving stuffing. That’s just out of the box.
Sweet potato casserole - my mil makes this for thanksgiving and it is coated in brown sugar and it almost looks like creme brûlée.
A whole roasted turkey - I never make one except thanksgiving and I just don’t know why! I always enjoy it say out loud as I’m eating it “why don’t I make this more often”.
Edited to fix: my phone replace creme brûlée’s with cremation brûlée. hahahaha

Re: holiday foods
Stuffing for sure. My aunt's mashed turnips are amazing.
Pumpkin and apple pie.
Also, I like an egg nog on occasion and I love Amaretto to sip on as well.

Re: holiday foods
When I am in NY, I need my mom’s comfort foods— baked ziti, turkey, coconut custard pie. I can’t stand pumpkin pie. TBH, I haven’t had a real Thanksgiving in about 15 years, so I kind of forget what it’s like. I’ve done them overseas, but it is only sometimes, and it’s different.
Therefore, I’ll move onto what I am used to here for the holidays.
When I do Thanksgiving for me and my SO, I usually do a fennel stuffed turkey breast and a green bean casserole and mashed potatoes. I can’t do it this year because I have to work tomorrow evening as it isn’t a holiday here.
One thing I do in both countries is Crème Brûlée.
For Xmas here there are so many foods I crave here. With all the Xmas markets, one is spoilt for choice.
My Favs: Potato pancakes Mulled spiced wine drinks with an extra shot (there are too many to list) Bosna sausage Desserts galore. I don’t like anything cinnamon, and they seem to have a lot of that here, but I work around that. Flammkuchen (pizzas with sour cream and bacon only) Dumplings Nuremberg sausages Skewers of meat at this one stand at the market
For Xmas here, I like a traditional duck or goose with gravy, red cabbage, and dumplings. So good!
I guess I’ve been here too long, sigh.

Re: holiday foods
Turkey for Thanksgiving, with red cabbage because we are German. Mashed potatoes with mushroom gravy. Turkey gravy for the turkey. Lots of vegetables and stuffing.
Pernil with rice and black beans from the Cuban side of the family, with red cabbage, mashed potatoes and brussel sprouts for the Germans.
Christmas eve my mom made roast goose for us, Dad got a steak. She saved the rendered goose fat and used that to make these scone like pastries with raisins. Knebbekuchen they were called. A specialty from the North of Germany, Nordfriesland. Yum.
Homemade cakes for dessert - either Black Forest or Chocolate or Apple tart. Flan (again the Cubans) and Plaetzchen - German cookies.
I miss my mom's cooking, but I think my sister and I do a pretty good job too. I learned a lot from Mom, but there are certain things I cannot replicate, or things that have put my own spin on. As long as Dad eats our cooking, we are doing a fine job.

holiday foods
Stuffing is the number 1 for Thanksgiving. It's so yummy we make an extra tray just for left overs.
My mom always made this celery/cream cheese/olive thing that we only eat on holiday. I hate celery but I love this.
Sausage bread.
For easter we make italian meat pie. Sooooo good.
Christmas cookies
Cinnamon rolls - always for breakfast on Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Christmas Eve fish dinner - Dad's baked clams and crab legs are my favorite! Fish sauce with pepper biscuits. Reminds me of my grandma!

Oh and on Thanksgiving I always have to have some Baileys in my morning coffee while watching the parade. I just checked to make sure the one I had in my fridge was still good!

holiday foods
The only “thanksgiving” food I’ll occasionally eat during the year is mashed potatoes so all of it is holiday food to me- turkey, stuffing, sweet potato casserole and cranberry sauce, which is my favorite thanksgiving food.

Re: holiday foods
I’m another vote for stuffing...my mom’s is sooooo good & she only makes it for this day. The other is marshmallow yams, but she makes those for Christmas too. My plate tomorrow will be: a few small pieces of turkey & the rest of the plate is stuffing & yams lol.
