OK, I'll bring it up....Coronavirus
Anyone on here have/had plans to travel internationally this year and thinking about cancelling?
We have a scheduled trip to Italy with the Family in April, but in-laws are considering cancelling. We have travel insurance.
I do understand but still disappointing.
Wanted to know other thoughts...........

Re: OK, I'll bring it up....Coronavirus
So I was thinking about this as well. My cousin is getting married in Italy around Memorial Day. Me and my family are not going (cannot afford it) but my parents, and my aunts, uncles and other cousins are planning on attending. I asked my mother if she had gotten travel insurance because I'm not sure how much worse it's going to get from now until then (like if there are any travel bans).

We are planning on going to Italy in June - as of now we have no plans to change anything, but we do have insurance in case the situation changes.

I was literally just coming on here to ask this!!!
We are going to Spain in May. I'm not worried about the cost of canceling - our hotels are all reserved but we will pay when we arrive. I did take the insurance on the airfare, but I don't know if "fear of getting sick" is covered.
Right now we are taking a wait and see approach.

Re: OK, I'll bring it up....Coronavirus
It’s been on my mind big time
We have a flight to Rome Booked for late July and a 7 day cruise out of Rome leaves us in Venice. Then spending a week in south of France. I’m terrified of being stuck on a cruise during a quarantine for weeks.
I also have never been to Italy or south of France. So I’ll be super disappointed if my trip gets canceled or we cancel it.
I have traveled extensively to many places in the world And I don’t want to stop traveling because of this virus. Praying for a cure very soon.

Nope, we just came back from Mexico last week, and were not worried at all. There were some people on the plane wearing masks.

That's exactly it. I am not sure it would be covered either. Will probably wait as long as we can to figure out what we will do.
A family friend who spoke to relatives in Italy lastnight says that right now its prevalent in Venice and spreading to Florence which is where we would be the first 4 days.
If I was going to Aruba or Mexico, I most likely would not be cancelling either. Thankfully, they are not worrisome areas....and hopefully won't be.

So I looked into the insurance we purchased. At this point, the airfare cancelation would NOT be covered by it. It would only kick in if one of us were to get sick before/during the trip.
Like I said, we are not doing anything at this point. We will re-evaluate as the trip gets closer.
I wish NYS would still allow people to purchase "cancel for any reason" trip insurance!

Re: OK, I'll bring it up....Coronavirus
We had plans to go to Paris and Barcelona this summer but bc of the virus I am not booking anything yet. It's too early to tell but I am concerned. Italy has over 500 confirmed cases already and the number has increased significantly in just days. My back up is a Disney cruise which we lovebut getting quarantined on a ship doesn't sound so great.
Much to my children's disappointment, I don't feel comfortable booking anything for now. There's no way to know how this will evolve but the list of countries with confirmed infections is up to 47!

There is, you just pay more money for it.

It is on my radar. I currently have a trip booked to Greece for July. Hoping things work out by then. One way of our fare is refundable. Worst case out $800 on flights.
I was also considering booking a few days in Disney in June but may hold off on that for now.

Not worried, I think the flu is more widespread, isn't it?
We just got off a plane last night. Saw maybe one person wearing a mask on both of our flights.

It is no longer offered in NYS. It was determined that it is not "insurance" under the definition of insurance.

I was going to come here and ask the same. We have a tricot Italy on June and we are taking a cruise from there. I was discussing that with DH and he feels that by that time, all will be better. Also, somewhere I read that the virus is worse in cold weather, so that gave us hope, for that time of the year in Italy.

Yes, it is, however the Flu is treatable. There are meds for it.
Corona there is Nada. And once it gets to your lungs, its pretty tricky.
Otherwise, I wouldn't be as concerned.
Specifically, Italy, it's spreading quickly there for some reason. That is why the concern.

Honestly though, the meds for the flu aren't great. They don't cure it. You have to take them within a certain time frame and they just ease the symptoms but don't cure it. And it doesn't work for everyone. my husband took tamiflu in the correct time frame and it did absolutely nothing for him. He was sicker than all of us who had flu and took nothing. So I'm not so sure the flu is all that treatable. Lots of people die from flu too. And yes there is a vaccine for flu but that isn't always guaranteed either.

There is no cure for either. Yet, Flu can be treatable regardless of the time frame it takes..
No treatment for Corona yet; except pray. Like I said above, once it hits the lungs, it becomes very concerning; most especially in older people, some of whom I would be traveling with.

Check your policy carefully. NYS insurance law section 1101 does not allow for the issuance of Cancel For Any Reason policies.

From the CDC
COVID-19: Approximately 2,810 deaths reported worldwide; 0 deaths in the U.S., as of Feb. 27, 2020.
Flu: 291,000 to 646,000 deaths worldwide; 12,000 to 61,000 deaths in the U.S. per year.
More people die from the flu, even though it's "treatable".

Yep.., Tamiflu works great for me, sucks for my poor nieces so they have to suffer through it. My sister was so worried about the cornavirus and my one niece got Flu B and suffered for two weeks. The other got a flu stomach bug and was in constant pain for a week and vomiting, she had to be rushed to the ER.

Re: OK, I'll bring it up....Coronavirus
The only thing I’m weary of is a cruise. I love them but I feel like they are a Petri dish for diseases and wouldn’t want to get stuck on a boat. But I am also not a fan of having a lot of sea days on my itinerary when I cruise.
I don’t have a job so don’t have want trips planned anyway, maybe Caribbean for Easter break if we can swing it.

It’s true... more people have died of the seasonal flu in 2019-2020 BUT the mortality rate of COVID19 is at least double that of the conservative estimates of the flu (in China and Italy where they have an outbreak). It’s more in other places. That’s why people are getting nervous.
I have travel plans to California in April. I’m suspecting that if this goes bad, airlines will suspend unnecessary travel. If it disappears with warm weather... then we go. I’m hoping for the latter.
ETA: I’m not minimizing flu. We all get all get flu shots and take precautions during flu season.

What are those of you who have plans overseas planning on doing? I was curious and saw that Italy is at a level 3 to avoid unnecessary travel but there is no ban currently. I would think even with travel insurance if you cancel, you're out the money, right?
