As time goes on, more people will join that mob. Second, parents are being forced to find solutions. They will eventually get this homeschooling down, create networks, and if it goes on long enough they will be uncomfortable sending their kids back to public school. You'd be surprised how much people hate change, especially once their kids are into a routine. Not to mention, private schools will want to reopen sooner than later. Anyway you look at it, if public schools remain closed for to long, parents will find solutions and they won't go back.

I can definitely see this happening.

Lmao. January. Where is the DOE getting their research?

I agree with PP. No school, no taxes. What are we paying for?

I would be livid that your district is not teaching their kids. Mine is in full on teaching, next week starts new materials. They seem to really be on the ball. I would be sending letters to your superintendent every day to do their job. There is no excuse for them not to teach kids.

I cannot be home with my child long term. I have a job. I would think the vast majority of families also have jobs that require them to, you know, go to work.

Yeah, you aren’t a teacher, but teachers are struggling right now trying to learn online teaching. That is not in their skill set. They can’t teach. Then no one can work.

My district posted that they plan to change the calendar and have the kids go back starting 4/6 (assuming it’s approved by board of Ed and the restrictions are lifted by that point)

Having 5 hours of video calls with a 4 year old running around isn't in my skill set but I still do it because I have an obligation to my job.

So if the parents want the kids in school and the teachers want the kids in school what is the argument? Stabilize the spread of the virus and re-open the schools.

If infection rates continue in this direction it won't take until January for all of us to be either immune or dead.

I don't think you're wrong, but that approach isn't going to do anyone any good. Teachers are trying to learn how to run a class of 20 something kids online, or are just sending assignments for kids to do. If parents throw their hands up and say 'not my job', those kids are going to miss out on learning. Obviously there are tons of parents that are working and can't dedicate the time, but at the end of the day it's a crisis and the workload of educating our kids is going to fall on the teachers and the parents.

Schools and Covid-19

This virus isn’t going away. And not having the kids go back to school this year is ludicrous. Jan 2021 absolutely not. This virus will be alive and well once the winter comes back anyway. This whole thing has been handled poorly. The economic ramifications itself is going to be felt for many years to come. Our kids need school and parents need to work. I don’t know what the solution is but this is not it.

Schools and Covid-19

January 2021???? I know many DOE teachers, and nobody has heard that. One friend of mine said her principal is still living in denial and believes April 20th is possible. I am realistic and know that is not going to happen. But 10 more months?
First of all, how do you remotely teach children you have never even met? Brand new Kindergartners doing online schooling? That would require a large amount of parent involvement, which many parents just can't give.
Second of all, children in China went back to school last Monday. After being home for 6-8 weeks total. We are a pretty crappy country if we require 10 months when they required 8 weeks. January is the height of cold & flu season- so that is a strange month for the DOE to decide that COVID-19 would die. I have no doubts your principal told you that- but I also would question his source of info.
And hear I was, praying we could go back before June, lol.

Out of school until Jan 2021? That's completely irresponsible. Our government fed and local is totally mishandling this situation. You cannot keep the world out of work and kids out of school for months and months and months. After a few weeks of this people will revolt.

My solution? Get your sh*t in order. Gather the medical supplies you need in the next three weeks instead of flooding the people with trillions of dollars in "relief packages" that will only serve as a bandaid. Innundate us instead with more test packaged. Turn all those empty cruise ships into makeshift hospitals. Get people back into work in in 3 weeks. Quarantine and shelter in place the older community and those at high risk. Maintain social distancing. Kids in school will not have extracurricular activities or sports, but should stay in their classrooms and limit class sizes to 25 max. No assemblies, no trips. Medications that help taper the symptoms should be explored. Etc, etc, etc.

We need real world solutions, not nationwide joblessness and restricted movement. I still maintain that the vast majority will get mild symptoms and help create a herd immunity. The number infected is so much more than the amount reported, meaning the % of mortality is so much lower than they are forecasting. In fact, I am pretty sure my husband and I have coronavirus right now. He was refused testing, so no way of knowing. How ridiculous is that?

Yes, yes, yes. Everything you just said.

Also, one of my friends tested positive. She was sick for a total of 19 hours. She said for the time she was sick, she had a horribly sore throat, chest heaviness, Shortness of breath and a cough. Her fever never went over 101.
She was feeling totally fine again when she heard the results...3 days after she took the test at Stony Brook. She said as quick as it came on it was over. I know that is not everyone's situation, but if anyone is concerned, thought I would share. She's 45 years old and works as a therapist in a hospital.

Schools and Covid-19

I'm a teacher and a parent. We have never been in this situation before, so NO ONE knows what to do.
Ok, let's just say that we are required to "teach" over the computer, live, in front of all of the students.
1. Who will monitor them to make sure they're a) logged in and b) stay at their computer?
2. Teaching isn't just standing in front of the room with chalk on a board. Lessons are interactive, hands-on and student centered. How do you do things like this over the internet?
3. Ok, let's just say we re-invent all of our smartboard lessons, hands-on lessons and collaborative work to "fit" a virtual classroom environment: someone has to allot time for that to happen, and it can't happen overnight!
4. Who is going to remedy all of the children's needs with regards to 504 and IEP compliance? Support services and classes? One-on-one ABA and shadow aides?
5. Who is going to watch my children while I'm off on some computer "teaching"?
6. I have 3 children and DH is also a teacher. How can my little household possibly handle the bandwith of 5 videoconferencing prgrams at a time, running simultaneously all day????

Please, everyone do not go online and just "demand" that teachers "just do their job" and "teach". Please stop saying you want your tax money back (School tax $ don't go just to teachers/administrators' salaries) It sounds ignorant. It sounds ridiculous. Everyone wants everything to go back to normal. Just remember that teaching is the ONE profession that creates all others.

I don't think anyone on this thread was blaming teachers for any of this. (Unless I missed it).
I saw people say IF this were to last to January with no school that our GOVT would have really dropped the ball.
And nobody here demanded their tax money back either.

Exactly, I'm not one to scream for my taxes back. I have better things to do lol. I was just stating that I've seen A LOT of people already doing so in the parenting groups in our area and I'm sure if this went on for any extended amount of time... more and more people will join them. I don't blame teachers, I don't blame anyone for the schools being closed right now. They need to be closed for a little while, but if they don't figure this shit out and reopen in a reasonable amount of time, I will blame our BOE and local Govt.

Our teachers have been great with giving us tools for online learning, but I'm not a teacher. I can't be on top of my kids all day to sit on their computers and use the learning apps instead of watching videos and playing games. I'm already looking for online tutors and alternatives because I have to work.

I'm not the only one, and once we find something that works and if we're forced to use these alternatives for too long, we'll be reluctant to change back. My sister has her kids doing remote sessions with their teachers and therapist. She already doesn't want to go back to doing in-office sessions.

But as a non-teacher, it sucks to have to juggle working from home and teaching my child (which isn’t in MY skill set). And if we get frustrated over it or aren’t doing a great job of it we get sh!t on and told it’s our job to drown like this.

I’m not demanding to get our taxes back - and I know this is a big change for teachers.

It’s just hard to work and teach two kids at the same time. My work is somewhat flexible but I feel like all I’m doing during the week is working - between teaching my two kids alone on days when my husband has to go to work and then working late to get my work done.

Although I too feel kids are done with school for the year, this is going to be a huge impact on them socially. People were already complaining they can’t talk to each other in person!!!

And it’s depressing to know even doing all of this we are likely to get the Coronavirus anyway!!!

My Dh was just saying this last night. He thinks kids may go back earlier than September to finish out their current school year and then start in their new grade in Sept. I don’t know how that will even work out with the teachers union.

Unfortunately it would be a lot of red tape with the teachers unions because I know a lot of them have in their contracts that they only have to work between certain dates (say Sept 1-June 30).

I’m just quoting you because your text is short.

My daughter’s teacher made a good point that we don’t have to stick to a Monday through Friday schedule. My job is very busy on Mondays and Tuesdays so those I’m using as kid “days off” and we do schoolwork on the weekends. The days all flow together at this point so my kids don’t know the difference. But this way I can get the bulk of my work done and I just allow them to watch TV, read, craft, play in the yard while I work.
And I understand this might not work for everyone because they might have very little children that need constant supervision or they might have older kids that need to do their work in real time. But for the K-6 set it seems to work well for us so far.
