with COVID I cant help but think of slaughter houses and in order to keep up with the demand of people over buying how fast they must be moving the already fast process along.

We hear horror stories of animals still being alive while dismemberment begins.

Now, I fear it is worse for the animals.

I'm not a big meat eater, mostly chicken ( not any better I know some fish)

I just ready Tyson stopped all work, due to corona

On a noramal day they process

almost 30,000 hogs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Insane, that does not include chickens or cows etc.

I think that if someone had an issue with the ethics of how animals are treated in slaughterhouses, that they might already be a vegetarian.

I don’t eat cow or pig but I do eat chicken, turkey, and seafood. I know that conditions are bad and that a lot of places plump them up, but I still eat it. I don’t imagine hearing stories about what’s going on now based on Covid would make a difference (unless they’re tainted and could make me sick).

Dh recently started eating only grass fed and grass finished beef and organic free range chickens and eggs after reading up on the garbage they feed traditional chickens, cows etc. He did it for his own health reasons but I feel like those animals are probably treated better as well but who knows....

I wonder how much the difference is as while people are panic buying, there are many restaurants that are either closed or limited hours...and I’m sure most of them aren’t serving as many meals as usual. Not to mention no parties, weddings, school meals, etc

Re: unsettling topic

It will be worse when the pig farmers feed some pigs to other pigs. The issue is multi fold. Usually, restaurants take the nicest cuts of meat. Schools and prisons take lesser quality meat. Does your grocery store have its own butcher? If yours does, you are getting a full range of beef choices. If not, you are getting left overs. Since there is less demand for better cuts, they don’t have as many left overs for chop meat. It is expensive to feed certain animals. Cows are okay because it is grass, and that is less expensive as you have a fixed land cost. Pigs and chicken cost more for feed. So pork and chicken prices are going to increase. Farmers have animals fed on cycles. Without processing plants on line, you have a back up. Without truckers you have a back up. Then you have food hoarding. So families that used to keep three days or so of food are keeping much more food in their freezer. So we do not have a food shortage yet, but there are problems along the delivery line.

This is one of the reasons why I buy from small farms that are transparent with their practices, give good care to their animals, feed a good healthy diet like nature intended, and are family owned. Makes a huge difference!

They are, especially if they come from small farms. The ones that have no problem if a customer suddenly and randomly decides to stop by to check out what they do. Regarding eggs, I’d focus on the eggs being pasture raised than organic.

Many restaurants out here and selling packages of meat and produce in addition to takeout meals. You can get your weekly groceries from a few local restaurants here so they are being innovative but still getting then food from their suppliers and keeping the supply chain going...
