So...am I being prudish?

My child (who is in kindergarten) had music class yesterday.
The teacher played "Kiss" by Prince

I thought that is a bit inappropriate for kindergarten kids.

Heck the first lines are:
You don't have to be beautiful
To turn me on
I just need your body, baby
.....
.....
You got to not talk dirty, baby
If you wanna impress me (ah)
You can't be too flirty, mama
I know how to undress me, yeah
I want to be your fantasy
Maybe you could be mine

am I being a prude here?
Is this how things are now a days?

Re: So...am I being prudish?

Um yeah that's a bit raunchy lyrics for Kindergarten.
I'm not a prude at all, but yeah, I wouldn't be happy with that.

That is not appropriate for kindergarten. I would say something.

Re: So...am I being prudish?

I sure hope it's not how it is now because that song for a K class would offend me, A LOT.

We have played that for DD. I guess the biggest concern would be those songs should be left up to the parents to allow the child to listen to not a teacher without parent consent.

Ha ha, that was my son favorite rapper at 3.

But although I don’t censor music from my kid, I agree it is inappropriate for a class setting.

Op: I don’t think you are being prudish at all.

Re: So...am I being prudish?

Did the teacher change up the lyrics at all?

Was it just background music to an activity? Or, was it more like "Listen to this cool song!" If it was just in the background, I don't think kids even pay attention to the words, so I would be OK with it. If the teacher wanted to discuss the song, then I think it's inappropriate. (But would that be done in K anyway?)

She played it from Youtube for the kids - so the lyrics were not changed and it was not background to anything it was the main thing.

Not sure what the activity was - but I do know after she played the Queen song she discussed the band with the kids.

Re: So...am I being prudish?

Inappropriate lyrics and under normal circumstances I would probably say something. But we are at the end of the school year and in strange times so I would let it ride for now. If she continues playing music like that next year then I would say something.

Re: So...am I being prudish?

Yeah, I would def say inappropriate if there was a discussion about (or any sort of focus) on the lyrics. Most kids hear songs and don't really get the words. So I think it's important to know the context. If they were just running around to the music, I wouldn't care so much. If my kindergartner came home repeating things like "You don't have to be beautiful to turn me on" I'd be pretty pissed.

Re: So...am I being prudish?

I was going to say maybe she didn’t realize the lyrics. I didn’t even know “We Will Rock You” has inappropriate lyrics since I only know and sing the chorus lol. But then I realized she’s a music teacher, so I got nothing as a defense.Chat Icon

So...am I being prudish?

Totally not appropriate unless there is some Kidz Bop version of it.

Lmao!!!! So true!

To the OP. I’d def have a problem with it and I’d def say something to the teacher. I wouldn’t be surprised if parents have already reached out to her. Would u like ur 5 yo to start singing things like “talk dirty”, “turn me on”, “undress me”, etc. Umm hell no!

Re: So...am I being prudish?

Totally weird and inappropriate to play for a bunch of kindergarteners! I don’t think I would say anything though unless she continued to play this song in class.

Yup, I agree too! This is totally inappropriate. Is this a public school or an after school private music class you enrolled your kid in?
