Re: when is the best time to lock in a rate for oil? and how do you do it?
Once you lock in with a price and service contract, they will make an appt to come to your home and inspect the burner (being that it's covered under the contract) and they will clean it also.. if you have under a 1/4 tank (diff companies have diff policies), they will fill it..
Good luck! I hope you lock in on a good rate but do it quick.. any price you lock in on now will be MUCH less than what the prices per gallon will be come the Winter

My company (General Utilities) wanted 25 dollars for the service check.. but as for the oil, it wasn't COD, so they left the bill in my mailbox, and I just paid it a few days later. They also have budget plans also if you are interested.

Re: when is the best time to lock in a rate for oil? and how do you do it?
Yes, you can. Just schedule the inspection of the burner to around the same time as you will be moving in. I would just not mention that you do not live on the premises as of yet. You don't want them to try and pull a fast one on you and say that you can't lock in? got me?
Good Luck!

Lock in as soon as you can! We were locked around $1.59 and now we are locked in at 2.39. I can tell you our house will be pleasantly cool this winter

eek, so for those of us that are not even in contract yet, if we end up getting a house that needs oil, we are doomed with the sky high prices

2.89 a gallon? Thats insane.
I'd rather freeze.
Problem is... don't you need oil to heat stuff like your hot water? I can deal with a cooler house... but i need hot water for my showers!

How hot can your water get with solar? Is it more like warm to moderately hot? Or can it get crazy hot where you can burn yourself?

Crazy hot that you can burn yourself! We have a filter on the shower that will prevent it from getting too hot but the sinks are HOT! With a solar tank you can adjust the max temp though. I think it's around 130 but don't quote me. We have a 275 gallon tank it's huge! We can run the dishwasher, washing machine and shower all at the same time and still have hot water. Our boiler only kicks on to maintain it's own temperature (for maybe 5 minutes a day in the Summer) and in the winter only when we have a lot of snow on the panels

Re: when is the best time to lock in a rate for oil? and how do you do it?
You can't lock in to all companies at any time.
I called mine the other day and they said I have to wait for the lockin letter to go out at the end of September, which I sorta knew as its the same every year. September - April lockins.

Stupid question, do you need to have alot of sun to heat the panels? What if its cloudy or you get minimal sun due to large pine trees around the house.
Did you put it in? Or did you buy the house like that?
Thanks!

Re: when is the best time to lock in a rate for oil? and how do you do it?
We bought the house like that. We are completely surround by trees. Since they are on our roof, not a problem. The goverment is going to be offering HUGE rebates and tax breask for solar panels being installed! I really want to have these removed and have the ones put in that due the electric for the house too.
If we have a cloudy stretch or if for any reason the water temperature falls below the temperature that we have it set at the we have to back ups- 1st being the boiler would kick on and heat it up just like a normal water heater, second being if the boiler didn't do it then it would be heated up electricly.
I think we use half of what the an ordinary 2 story home uses because we rarely have to use the boiler/oiler to heat the water.

The best time to lock in used to be in the summer but that is not the case any longer with the price of oil as crazy as it is. Lock in as fast as you can. I use Meenan and am very happy with their service.

Re: when is the best time to lock in a rate for oil? and how do you do it?
I have a feeling a lot of people are going to get screwed with these rising utility bills and end up on the "ramen noodle diet".
You may even see a rise in forclosures, and I think once the price of oil hits the mainstream... its going to halt the escalating sales price increases we are used to seeing.
