Job Stuff (long)
Ok-- so, I have posted about job stuff before... Here's another post.
I started a new job back in May-- after having left a job that I hated-- it was just a poor fit for me. After being at my current job for 4 months, my boss left to go be a CEO of another company. I was actually out of town on business when this happened, and returned from out of the country to the surprise. He left right away because of the new position he was going to-- he obviously couldn't say anything to me prior, but things just happened the way they did. He reached out the following business day, and told me the sitch, etc. and said he would call me in the New Year-- with a potential job offer-- he wanted to bring me with him, thinks I am great, etc.
Fast forward to Jan-- I met with him today and he has a job for me. This guy is great-- I really respect him and he is a great mentor. Additionally, it's extremely flattering to have the CEO want to bring me over. It's a little bit of a raise, and the job sounds great and it's a better commute.
Here's the thing. I am 90% sure I am going to take this job-- although I feel like, I haven't even been at my current job for a year, my previous couple of jobs-- about a year. I have changed jobs a lot from having made either a poor choice, or from being laid off due to the economy, etc. I am nervous about changing jobs again-- but this can be a great opportunity. He also made me privy to more stuff at my current job-- which makes me feel it's not so stable and not really a "career job". Also, my current job has not handled my boss's exit very well and has left me hanging with very little structure-- which I do not like at all. If this situation were reverse-- they would show me no loyalty.
Am I stressing over nothing? I am crazy not to be totally excited about this right? I am excited, I am just nervous about change-- also, just getting into my comfort level at my job now-- been there about 9 months now.
Thoughts?

Randi...I think you should take this new job....sounds good.
One thought....do you think your old boss is stretching the truth about your current place to try and get you to come to his new place? Just a thought. But it sounds like your mind is made up...Go for it!

Re: Job Stuff (long)
This sounds like a great opportunity, especially if you have a good rapport with this person.
It does shoot up a red flag when you jump from job to job, but if you plan on going to this next location and staying there for more than a few years, then I'm sure it won't be a problem or frowned upon. Besides, the person hiring you is okay with your moves up until now.
I'd say, GO FOR IT!!!
Good luck!!!

Re: Job Stuff (long)
i think i would go with the new job... changing jobs is always nerve racking... i always get the worse feeling in the pit of my stomach the first few weeks of a new job, like i cant do anything right and that I shouldnt have taken that position, but after a few weeks pass that feeling eventually fades away...
you also seem to have very valid reasons for being at a few different jobs in the past few years... so I wouldnt worry about that! Do what is best for you!
good luck!

Re: Job Stuff (long)
thanks-- Since 2002 I have been laid off twice and have had to take jobs as a result of being unemployed-- some choices were better than others. The reason for why I would be leaving my current job-- CEO poached me-- that's a vaild reason!
Also, the guy who I am sorta reporting to now is kinda, uh, much to be desired. I won't learn anything from him and he is not really a good manager.
I am just so nervous--- even to give notice!

you have every right to be nervous...the first time I resigned from a job I burst into tears...I was 21..it was my first job out of college my manager went off on me...it was not good...BUT I needed to leave!
Its always nerve racking but in the long run you are moving on to bigger and better

Re: Job Stuff (long)
I am ok with resigning-- but the fact that it's a little sensitive is what is so scary.

Re: Job Stuff (long)
I would take the other job. Sometimes it takes a while to get settled in a place that's your home.
there are parts of my resume that look like swiss cheese. It hasn't hurt me.

Re: Job Stuff (long)
The bigger the risk, the bigger the reward. Take the new job! Don't be so sure of the "stability" situation at your current position. A lot of employers say that even if they are friends... trust me.
It sounds like you can't go wrong anyway, closer, more $, better position etc. Go for it, Congrats & good luck!!
P.S about your resume as long as it doesn't look like you took a step back and were always climbing the latter you will be ok.

Re: Job Stuff (long)
Randi,
I think being that you really respect your old boss and given the fact that your length at your current job isn't a factor, you should go for it! That is, if you see this as a long-term move. Good luck, and I have this new kick-arse resume thatI may send to you!!!!!
Good Luck

Re: Job Stuff (long)
You should take the new job - it sounds great, especially that you're 95% sure. I too have switched jobs a lot in the last three years - b/c of bad choices, etc. - as long as there's a valid reason for each I think its fine. Is the new company a good one, stable? I think its great this guy told you he'd call in the new year, and then actually followed through - that's rare too - sounds like a great opportunity!
Good luck!

Re: Job Stuff (long)
thanks everyone for your comments-- I guess I am just afraid since it is a slightly sticky situation-- but I guess in the end, all I should be worrying about is myself and what's best for me.

But Randi, isn't your industry quite transient? It's tech and creative if i remember correctly. maybe he'll offer you an employment contract snce he wants you.

Re: Job Stuff (long)
I think any change is difficult (at least for me it is) but I would go for the new job.
You only need to explain your job history when you're going for a new job. If I was interviewing you & you said you left the company because your old boss offered you a better position - it speaks volumes in terms of a reference.
Only advice I can really offer is when you resign to simply say you had a job offer with a better opportunity. I wouldn't tell anyone I was going with your old boss. In our company, all employees sign a confidentiality agreement which includes terms that they cannot poach employees after leaving for a period of time. That's not to say an employee can't approach an ex-employee for a job. I wouldn't want anything to muddy the waters of your hiring once you resigned.
Good luck! and congratulations!!!

Re: Job Stuff (long)
Congratulations, it sounds like a great opportunity. I would make sure there is a long-term opportunity at the company where you are moving - that way in your next move, you will demonstrate more stabiltiy.

Re: Job Stuff (long)
I would take the new job, but no matter what stay for 2 years. I had moved around a lot too, So when I made my last move, I made myself stay there two and a half years, that way It looks more stable.
And Def. do NOT tell them where you are going. Not even one person
