I want to get into tutoring but I don't know how to get into it. I work in NYC and live on LI.
If you tutor how did you connect with the kids you tutor???
TIA

It's hard to find kids to tutor. since many teachers give eachother their kids (because you cant tutor your own students).
How many hours per week do you have to work in order to do home instruction? Does the agency give you materials, etc?

I work as many as I want to take on. Right now I have 3 students for a total for 7 hours a week. The agency gives me the paperwork, and the schools are suppose to give the textbooks and what needs to be covered. Many districts I have worked with this year are not cooperative with getting books, so I have a bunch of my own.

Can you give us info about the agencies????
I know at this point they most likely do not need anybody, but maybe next year :)
ETS: the one student that I have was set up through my district (where I have been doing leave replacements all year). I am paid privately, but they asked me to do it.

Re: wHO here tutors? How did you get your jobs?
I got my tutoring jobs by having my former students parents ask me. I never really looked for a tutoring job. What i would do is put out flyers in your local library (like the person above stated) or something like that. Good luck!

Re: wHO here tutors? How did you get your jobs?
There are always agencies advertising in the papers.
I work(ed) for Islip Tutoring in Holbrook and Top Grade in Sayville. Plus there is Syosset Tutoring and Creative Tutoring.
I wasn't crazy about creative because the guy seemed very scattered brained. Everytime I sent him paperwork he lost it.
Islip and Top Grade both pay between 23-27 an hour. It's not bad money although on your own you can make more.
I haven't actually tutored anyone. I have been assigned to be there home teacher. I've had some students come and go after a few weeks if they returned to school and currently I have 3 students who I have for the rest of the year. One I have had since January.
I like being able to teach and stay in that mode while job searching. I like it better than subbing because I am doing what I love.

I get them through the other teachers at work. You cant tutor your own kids so when my colleagues get a parent looking for a tutor they recc me or our chairperson recc people.
I also get others by work of mouth....

its for students who are sick and can't go to school. for example I have had students with broken legs, psychological problems and eating disorders.
the other group of students i have had are those suspended for quite some time.

Re: wHO here tutors? How did you get your jobs?
I started tutoring this year and it is great extra $$$. I tutor one of my students from last year, the parent asked me. I am now going to pick up another student this summer from my partner's class. I was also asked by one of my parents to tutor someone in my own class and I don't know district policy but I would rather not. It is great since it is cash $. Good Luck!!

Tutor/teach for Kaplan! You can make up to $50 an hour with our new Elite teacher program and we have a standarized curriculum so you don't have to make your own lesson plans. Plus you are guaranteed work, we need lots of math and verbal tutors on Long Island! For more info, FM me.
