Don't Open If You Believe in Santa!

How did you find out Santa was not the one leaving presents in your house on Christmas? How old were you? How did you find out? If your parents were not the ones to tell you - did you tell them that their secret was out?

I was 5. I was in kindergarten and this little boy told me that my parents bought my presents. I didn't believe him at first.. but then it started to click and make sense. I never told my parents that I knew because I figured that I would get MORE presents if they thought I still believed. They finally asked me when I was about 12 if I knew that Santa wasn't bringing the presents to me every year!Chat Icon

I have a 6 year old who is starting to doubt the existance of Santa. I am not ready to tell him the truth... in fact I am not sure I will ever be ready! And I don't know how I would handle it? How did you, would you, will you - handle that situation when/if it comes up?

Re: Don't Open If You Believe in Santa!

There were clues, the huge roll of wrapping paper in my Mom's closet that happened to be exactly the same as the paper used for our presents every year.

The snide tone whenever Santa was mentioned by my 3 older siblings who knew he didn't exist.

But I think I believed for a long time. It wasn't a big deal in our house, we didn't leave cookies out or anything. Santa wasn't any kind of icon. I enjoyed the family time more than the idea of Santa.

Then again, I was one of those strange kids who wasn't as enamored with the presents as I was the other things that Christmas meant to our family. Chat Icon

Re: Don't Open If You Believe in Santa!

oy vey...

do i have a story for you.

i have a distant relative who started to tell my, then 8yo, son that there is no santa. i was able to convince him that santa does exist, but i knew that the belief had been "compromised".

at the age of 10, my son asks again. this time, he's heard so much about how it's not true, that i decide to tell him the truth (MISTAKE NUMBER 1!!!!!!!!!)

my son started to cry, that mean angry cry!!! he told me... and i quote because a mother does NOT forget when her baby says something like this..."HOW COULD YOU HAVE LIED TO ME FOR MY ENTIRE LIFE??!! HOW COULD YOU??!! I WILL NEVER BELIEVE ANOTHER THING YOU SAY!!!!!"

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon you can only imagine how i felt. i thought my son would never love me again.

a co-worker told me that what she did was to tell her kids that santa... the spirit of santa IS REAL, and moms and dads all over the world help keep his spirit alive.

by the way, i never believed... my parents weren't very good at faking it. i went along because i thought that was what i was supposed to do.

i know what you're going through.
the best of luck to you....LEARN FROM MY MISTAKE Chat Icon

I think 6 is still too young for them to know. I think I was about 13 when my dad told me! Chat Icon But by then I had already figured it out.

My DH found "Santas" corn cob pipe that they put out for him every year while rifling through his dads bedroom.

He gets so sad when he tells that story.

funny way it happened

i was 12

and the santa reveal came about through the tooth fairy.

I lost a tooth and put it under my pillow - and casually mentioned that i wished i could get $5, instead of the usual $1, because of some toy I wanted to buy.

Lo and behold, there was $5 the next morning. I was a bit suspicious because I only mentioned it casually.

I asked my mom and that's when she told me

She added " and while we're on the subject - ditto on the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy" Chat Icon

I'm glad I'm not the only one who was a bit older. Funny thing though I already knew about the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy. Chat Icon

I saw my sister's U-Drive It in the attic & waited to see on Christmas to see if the present was from my parents or Santa.

I'm going with the spirit of Christmas angle when I have to explain it. Oh & the Spirit of Easter & St. Patrick's day too.Chat Icon

Re: Don't Open If You Believe in Santa!

I think I was in 2nd grade when I found out. I got up in the middle of the night on Christmas Eve to go to the bathroom and my parents' bedroom door was open. (You can see into their room and onto their bed from the doorway of the bathroom.) I saw some gifts on the bed. I went back to bed, etc... The next morning those were the gits in my stocking and from Santa.

Re: Don't Open If You Believe in Santa!

I remembering being very unsure if Santa was real for a few years. Then one day when I was about 12 my mom had mentioned something about buying my bike (which I had gotten from "Santa") and I said "But Santa brought me my bike" and she said "Well guess who Santa is" Chat Icon

So that just confirmed my suspicions!

I was young when I found out he wasn't real. Maybe 7?? My brother and I were supposed to be asleep and he came into my room to get me so we could go see if santa left any gifts yet (it was about 12am) and we tip toed down about 3 steps and saw my mom wrapping the gifts on the dining room table. Re: Don't Open If You Believe in Santa!

wow..I was about 6 when I told my friends that Santa didn't exist. We are Jewish and our parents didn't lead us down the Santa path. When I told my friends they all went home and told their parents what I said. My mother got calls and told them, well, Santa isn't real..my daughter was speaking the truth.

Re: Don't Open If You Believe in Santa!

the clues left around the house- wrapping paper, handwriting being my mom's...I don't remember exactly, but I think I was 10 or 11

I will hold out with my children until they figure it out themselves-

My DH and his brothers- one who is only 10 right now- never believed in Santa. When I met them, Dhs little brother was only 3 and I could not believe that he didn't believe in Santa, I tried to convince the family that they should include "santa" for him, but they didn't. They are big Christmas people but not into the many gifts or the icons of the holidays...
ETA: I think it is cultural for them
