Re: kitchen remodels... show me yours and how much $$$
. I got a lot of deals for stuff. I think I paid about 15,000 all together. (Actaully DH just corrected me and told me it was less than 10,000$) I got the cabinets from a family member that owns a kitchen and bath store. It was a floor model. I bought the under sink cabinet and the pantry from Home Depot. The same lady threw in the granite countertop because she couldn't reuse it and we paid 900 to have it recut and installed. We went to the habitat for humanity re-store to get the sink and the dishwasher.
Habitat for humanity re-store is a place where contractors, home owners.. anyone.. donates materials. They CANNOT use donated material in houses. They need money to buy materials so they sell these donations to the public for like 60-70% off retail. It is really hit or miss. You can always get doors and windows there. I will never pay retail for that stuff again. I recently saw a subzero fridge, brand new for 700$ They have tubs, sinks, hardware for the sinks, windows, doors, french doors, cabinets, tile etc. You just have to have an open mind becasue you never know what is going to be there.
Also I got the tile for the backsplash from the Home Depot Expo clearance section. We installed everything ourselves.. even the plumbing. My brother ran the electric and my dh taught himself to plumb with my dad's help and some videos on you tube.Seriously. My dad came over and checked the work out after and it was perfect. We found instructions online about how to install the tile backsplash and it was really easy and fun! . We didn't have enough granite to do the whole countertop so we got a section of butcher block countertop (a really nice and inexpensive option) from IKEA. It was so cheap. We installed that section over the dishwasher and now I have a butcher block area for food prep. I love it.
All in all we have such a sense of accomplishement and overall that kitchen might have cost 25000 + and we did it so much cheaper. We love it. Now if we could just get my BIL over from NJ to install the crown moulding around the tops of the cabinets. Before: After:

Re: kitchen remodels... show me yours and how much $$$
we did a lot ourselves - except electricity, plumbing (we moved things around) and the sheet rock ($5K)
our kitchen is about 8x10 and we have a penisula(no upper cabinets there) - so caninets were ~$6K. Granite was $3K. Appliances (we haven't gotten around to finding the right refrigerator yet though - 2 years later) were $2K (stove and DW) and then maybe another $1K in backsplash tiles, handles, etc.
$17K total.

Re: kitchen remodels... show me yours and how much $$$
we gutted everything & removed a wall to make our kitchen bigger. we did all of the work ourselves, we spent $5,000 total. Granted we don't have alot of bells & whistles or high end finishes but I host 4-6 dinners for 15 people or more a year & we cook home 99% of the time & the kitchen will be four years old this summer & everything functions perfectly.
Here's the before- its very gross
here's the after

Sure, the first major thing was recognizing that we would not be getting high end finishes for 5k. As I said this kitchen is almost 4 years old now & we use it constantly & its condition is still perfect. I realize solid wood cabinets would last for 50 years & be better however I don't know anyone that keeps a kitchen longer than 15 or 20 years anymore. Since we did this renovation before we even moved in the house & now we've had a chance to live here & use it, it really has helped us to visualize how our "dream" kitchen someday might be. The only thing I wish I had was a double oven because we host so many big dinners, other than that I can do it all in this kitchen. We bought home depot special order "stock" cabinets-not mills pride. They take a few days to get & they arrive assembled. We did our own design, DH used wall cabinets to build the custom pantry on the right side. We paid $1200. I've also heard that Ikea cabinets are an awesome value. We sunk our fridge into the wall by taking away part of a large closet in our guest room to maximize floor space in the kitchen & make everything look more built in or custom. We had custom formica countertops done by CTE 631-589-3400 he is such a nice guy & his prices are great. Having formica custom fabricated gives much more design flexibility than buying the ready made pieces from home depot. I'm not a fan of granite & I love my formica counters. We paid under $800 I got our sink & faucet on ebay, brand new. almost 1/2 off retail. Our floor is vinyl-traffic master, it was less than $1 a sq foot. it holds up really well & its a little softer to walk on than ceramic. We do plan to change it to hardwood in the future. We bought clearance appliances-got our over the range microwave for $99, dishwasher for $149. We used a bold paint color & large crown molding to give the room more impact. We skipped a tile backsplash, I hung a few things on the wall under the cabinets & I love the way the paint color looks, we also used Matte washable paint so if stuff splatters behind the stove its easy to clean. We also have a ten foot ceiling in there so we built the custom soffits above the cabinets to disguise that they are so low & we used a color other than white on the ceiling. We used basic high hats for lighting. we changed all of the wiring & all of the plumbing, as well as all new sheetrock & subflooring. The biggest savings of all was the cost of labor, we did everything ourselves so that was a huge savings. I hope that helps

Re: kitchen remodels... show me yours and how much $$$
Hi -- we used Lowe's for our cabinets and were very happy. We got granite from Stone World. DH and my brother did the gutting and installation so that saved lots of labor. Appliances were PC Richards - Frigidaire... It was a galley kitchen and we bumped out a wall and added an L shaped counter with 4 stools around... totally changed the look... We didn't get as good a deal as the previous poster for 5k, but we came in at slightly less than double that, which I still think is great for the before/after transformation...
