Re: Can anyone reccomend good nursing home or assisted living in Nassau county
I have had my share of investigating nursing homes, rehab facilities, but only in Suffolk County, so I can't really help you with Nassau...sorry......But I will say this, make sure look on line for ones that you are interested in. Just google the name and many website will come up. I know there are many nursing homes in Suffolk County that I know I wouldn't put anyone...if you have any questions just let me know.
Also if you have friends that ride either for a private or vollie ambulance they will also know which ones are better than others.

This is very true. I just recently researched several places, mainly in Suffolk though, and had help from DHs friends who are EMTs. Here are some links that I found helpful:
http://nursinghomes.nyhealth.gov/browse_search.php?form=REGION&rt=R_NY+Metro+-+Long+Island
http://www.medicare.gov/NHCompare/include/DataSection/ResultsSummary/ResultsSummary.asp
The best thing you can do is find the ones on those sites you think you'd be interested in and then go there. See how many people are in bed versus in activities and floating around. Take note of the number of nurses and aides. See if you can go in a patient's room and check to see if the bathroom is clean. Ask to see the activity calendar. What is the manner of the staff when they talk to or about the patients living at the facility?
Also, I just placed my grandmother temporarily in a place because our first choice is full. We had to look into 6 other places until we found one that had an open bed. So bed availability will play a role, but you can always transfer if you want later.
I just went through this entire process with my grandmother, so feel free to FM if you have any questions. It is a very stressful process, especially if you're doing it by yourself.

Daleview Care Center
My experience with them was over 10 years ago so things might've changed, but at the time the staff was great.

Re: Can anyone reccomend good nursing home or assisted living in Nassau county
Also, just to give you an idea....looks only give half a picture. We had the option of placing my mom in one about 5 min from our house or aaaaallll they way out east in the Hamptons. This place was bran new, gorgeous, clean, didn't smell etc.
It turned out to be the biggest nightmare! My mom would call my dad at 4 am saying that noone was responding to her call bell, she fell out of bed, we finally had to get a lawyer involved to get her medical records because we requested them 2x and they said they never received the letter.
Also, if you go to look at some of these places today, the people that you speak with might not be there tomorrow. There is a high turnover rate in management at these facilities.
They are not all bad.....there are just some that are better than others. Just stay on top of them and speak with administrators if you have problems....keep notes of things as they happen......
Good luck with your search......

Re: Can anyone reccomend good nursing home or assisted living in Nassau county
Having to place a loved one in a nursing home is probably one of the hardest thing that anyone can do. She is very lucky that you have her in her life to care for her and get her in a good place. I see it all the time where children drop off their parents at the nursing home and never see them again. It is just heart breaking.
I had to look for nursing homes for the great uncle who was like a dad to me. But since I was very familiar with the nursing homes in the area I knew which ones I wanted him to go and which ones I didn't want him to go. I am a vollie EMT in my town.
Depending on what her ADL is maybe she doesn't need a "nursing home"...maybe she can go to like an assisted living facility?
