Silk Drapes "Puddling"

For my bay window, I wanted to put up a double rod with silk drapes that "puddle" on the floor. I also wanted to have white sheers, but I am not sure if they should be the same length as the silk drapes, or shorter.

The issue that I have is that the window is under a soffit, so 84" length drapes will puddle the floor, but 63" length will be past the sill but not near the floor.

Any opinions????

IMO - they should be the same length.

Here's a picture of my parent's MB where the sheers puddle too.

its personal preference but I have never seen it done that way, and was taught that they should not touch the floor

i agree with Heather - i think it looks better. you can always release the hem and re-hem it so that the length is a bit longer.

buy the longer lengths and have the sheers hemed to the correct length so they just reach the floor but do not puddle. the panels can puddle though.

you can hang them and use a piece of chalk to mark where they need to be hemmed. you can bring them to the dry cleaners or a seamstress, and the chalk wipes right off

ETA: your buying lined silk panels right? silk panels that are not lined will fall apart, almost into dust, from the sun within a year, they MUST be lined. If its 100% silk

Thanks. I was thinking of taking them to the tailor if they were too long.

Yes, I am buying the lined silk drapes from Pottery Barn. They are actually on sale and cheaper than the ones I saw at BBB and JCPenney.

I'm just not sure if I should also buy the sheers or just have the silk drapes. I don't want to completely cover the window since I like to display pictures on the window ledge and I also like the light coming in.

If you buy the sheers also, you could always pull the sheers and the silk panels over to each side. Just a thought. Chat Icon

I like it without them, except in the bedroom, i love them in the bedroom.

sheers also work great if you have very short windows and are trying to lengthen them visually.

you can always buy just the panels and hang them without the sheers. if you decide you want the sheers you can buy them after. they are much cheaper then the panels so you can get them anywhere Chat Icon

Post pictures when you hang them!!

I have the silk drapes from PB in two bedrooms and love them! They're great quality and for sale price, totally worth getting!

I decided to try out just the silk panels alone and they look great. I should probably get them hemmed, though, once I get a shade that can come down for privacy. I have chairs in front of the drapes, so you can't even really see the bottoms too much anyway.

I'm putting my pictures on the computer tomorrow or Monday (after Halloween) and I'll post pics then.

Thanks everyone for your input!

Re: Silk Drapes "Puddling"

this is an ongoing fight between me and dh. i like puddling, he HATES it. i had my panels do this (they were really pretty with roses on them) and whenever i turned my back, he'd make a pretty little knot in them so that htey didn't touch the floor.
I'd go and undo the knot when he wasn't looking...
